My Lazer ZX-sorta R

I started building this when I wandered into a LHS that had a bunch of Rubbermaid tubs full of old Kyosho parts. I was originally just looking for a few things for my Optima Mid but when I realized how much stuff they had I decided to try and build a Lazer out of what they had. Well, I would probably put a couple more of them together with the parts I have but I'm going to keep it to one with lots of spares.....for now.

After breaking the rear shock tower mount in a very light roll over, I didn't have another one to replace it with so I had to get creative. After dinking around for a few hours (days!!!) I figured out a way to stabilize what I had left without moving any of the mounting points out of place. In the mean time I've found a few more mounts but will always stabilize them as shown in the pic. That is until Jake machines me a couple out of 7075 ;)

I've got some sort of aluminum bellcrank system on there now but that will be getting swapped out for the blue Kyosho bellcranks I have on the way (thanks jamin!). I've also got a full set of aluminum front and rear arm mounts, plus enough plastic ones to stone the entire Roman army. I stabilized the wing stays with aluminum standoffs. I'm not sure if it's necessary but I like how it looks and I don't think it can hurt any. It's also got a ZXR slipper which I'd like to get a couple of the RW spurs for, just haven't got the Paypal funds right now (also can't find them on the website, any help...?).

In order to get the LiPo's to fit nice and sung against the rear bulkhead I had to remove the 2 outside mounting bosses for the upper deck. I plan on fabbing up a pair of 90* pieces to attach the upper plate to the rear bulkhead from the top rather than from the bottom as it is originally. I've got a set of aluminum rear hub carriers for it but they've got really sloppy bearing bores. I'm going to stick with the stock plastic ones for now, not much can happen to them sitting there with no drive shafts ;) That's also another Paypal issue, as soon as funds are replenished I'll be picking up a set of the proper length CVD's.

Email rw racing and mention what you want, if your on about my design then say the one James Instone designed for the lazer zx/zxr with the B4 hexes on, dont forget 100t 48dp as well.

Next year im doing a rear redesign as i broke the rear mount recently as well. Also i did make a lipo tray design but is costly as i based it around the trf511 and needs work to fit properly. Still like what you have done. Mip ujs would be better than the original, best bet would look through all the lazer threads here as iso mentioned what sizes youll need. Oh one more thing, once you have my spur fitted the car handles a 5.5 with ease. Good racing.

That's an interesting idea for a shock tower brace, Adam, but I wonder if it will be very effective as the ball-ends will allow it to flex. Maybe you could take off the shock tower and use it to trace out on a scrap piece of carbon fiber or something a reinforcing brace like in the diagram, and just bolt it right next to your existing shock tower beneath the wing mount. It would provide extra strength and prevent side-to-side flexing which is what probably caused it to break during the roll-over. Just an idea--this is something I'm planning to do with my Barney Optima because the aluminum Optima shock towers are notorious for bending.

Good idea but it's not the shock tower that's breaking, it's the plastic mount/rear bulkhead that's breaking. There may be a little bit of flex at the ball ends but it's an insignificant amount. Besides, too rigid and it's just going to break something else, like the shock tower.

Wait for next year, when I am done you will see a design like no other and should stop this issue once and for all. I just hope my mold specialist friend can make tie for me so I can get this right from the bottom up.

Must be a common piece to break. Check out this solution. The piece is still broken, but is being held together.

Strange, I raced the Lazer back in the days and I never broke that part. Did Kyosho made this in different type of plastic?

so it was a nice cheap build from the lhs hey adam? looking choice, what body do you run? won't be long till this problem is fixed it sound's like jame's 8)

Its just the lipo battries and brushless set up, you just installed balistic jet engine rocket ship power into your car if you wreck and hit the throttle are leave the throttle on, your gonna break something these cars are not getting weaker your just going balistic...Davsrc good luck,

@ Gary: It was cheaper than building one from parts or buying it on Ebay since I was also sorting the containers of parts for them at the same time ;) I'd like to run a ZX-RR body or something similar.

@ daverc: Actually no. I broke the original shock tower mount in 2007 when I started back at racing. No LiPo or brushless then for me, I was running NiMh cells with a 14 double. I got clipped in the air over a long triple, landed squirrely and then the car flipped. Shock mount broke then... Since this mod I haven't had any problems with it.

Its hard to say, ive been in races where I was winning, and all I had to do is make that last turn small jump and bamm im broke just stress from all the hammering If your winning and going fast these cars sometimes just need to have stress parts replaced I also think the parts got cheeper the plastics some are brittle in 2000 I bought a lazer 2000 and man I thought I would be able to use some parts, pure junk. I have 6 or 7 lazers now two zx and 5 zx-r I use two to practice and so far only race two. I think the plastic rear shock tower holder needs to be metal with a six mm shock tower I still say now with lipo put all the weight you want on these parts there still gonna bend break the only thing ta do is get out in front and keep spares ...Davsrc

I broke mine on the same day Jamie Booth did his, really weird how they go and you can see where the stress points are hence why they break. The car is much stronger than current cars and was the strongest on the market at the time it was being sold. Ive an idea that I am currently working on and when done should be the be all and end all and will look stunning as well. Designs have started already.
