bmx, epoxy paint and more

Post by knucklebuster »

I think I recall there was a bmx forum within the rc10talk forum or maybe one passionate biker, so here it goes.

In the early 80s I found a quality baby blue epoxy appliance paint in a can. The paint was super hard and resisted not only scratches but chips without a clear coat. I used this for one of my best paint jobs and bike builds, a Redline with white zrims, uni, and other with painted parts. rad dude!

Anyway, just wanted to know if any one has tried this type of paint on the rc10 chassis. Maybe a cheap alternative to some other efforts.

was it a 1part or 2pack paint? generally if its not 2pack, its not really 'epoxy' afaik

there used to be several good enamel 1part coatings, we'd apply it via a B&D airless gun.
Some of them were rated for ultra heat (eg engine/exhaust temp) and were great on bike frames.

These days a lot of these coatings have been banned due to 'green' restrictions, VOCs etc.

Thanks Tamiya... the paint was 1 part in a can. I think enamel may be correct, probably Rustoleum.

John Boy, I will dig around for the picture the next time I visit my parents (local). The only bmx bikes left in the stable are a Hutch Trickstar frame and fork and my first bad boy, the nickle-plated Goose.

yep Enamels dry to a very hard outer shell, harder to find good rattlecans anymore

2pk is toxic and needs repiratory protection

Nothing needs clearcoating except for auto colours which dry matte
they're usually labelled as "Clear Over Base (Rapid Application)".

BITD them BMXes would get ridden hard & kiddies would repaint their frames every month,
or at least every school holidays. These days we can't even buy rattlecans if under 18.

I crack up when buying paint and I am asked for id... really, I have a long beard and crows feet. My cell phone is only capable of making, get this, phone calls. Is that proof enough?

Not too long ago "cell phone" was what you used to call your lawyer with, to come bail you out. :P

One of the rare days yesterday when the 1955 MG to see daylight & warm up its fluids.
Its a real reminder to life before fancy electronics... plus its impossible to SMS or call
when its hard enough rowing along a stickshift (lever direct into gearbox) with No power clutch,
No synchromesh, No power steering, No power brakes and No bluetooth wireless handsfree.

Amazing to me anyway, as it took cars ~50yrs to get to that stage... & minimal innovation 50yrs since.

Whereas the transistor only appeared in 1965 and today i've got more CPU power in my pocket
than in my PC 15 yrs ago... don't even mention the Apple ][ 10yrs before that.

Asbestos brake pads WORK great too... and the brake dust isn't jetblack like modern stuff.
