Well i have looked at these to long thinking i should try to save them and even thru them in the old battery box So this was the order of events.


1. remove all old wiring

2. remove solder with like 20 feet of desolder braid

3. remove double stick tape and hot glue with two sore thumbs

4. sand end tabs on lathe

5. trim melted shrink wrap ends with exacto on lathe

6. clean cells with green 3m pad in soap and water

7. final clean and glue removel with zippo lighter fluid

8. resolder new wiring and im done so glad i decided to tackle them!!

Very slick Ryan!! I have a pack of 1700scrc's that I have started on, can you tell me more about the desolder braid? And have you found any of the thin braid for reassembly?

The braid is just radioshack desolder braid comes in a roll. I havn't come across the thin braid but i do have some vintage VRP electroflo bars if you need some i have like 6 packs.

Those look great! Auto brake parts cleaner also works to clean off the flux and oxidization.

I think there was or is some Trinity braid on ebay. I have some used Trinity Lennon Lugs if anyone needs any.

When removing old solder, why not get a solder sucker? This is a large marker size device that uses vaccuum to remove melted solder. To ready the tool you just push in the locking plunger and dip the tip into the melting solder and push the button which releases the spring loaded plunger and the vaccuum produced sucks up the molten solder. After using one of these, you will never go back to the braided wire type solder remover..

I use both for desoldering and I find them both to be useful.

Quick question on this restoration project, as I'm about to solder up a couple of old sanyo battery packs from matched cells. Can I ask what you used to connect each battery? Is that the resoldering braid referred to? Are there specific connection parts/resolder braids for making these packs up (I've never put single cells together before, only ever had complete battery packs) or have you just used some copper strips and soldered them on to the ends of each cell?

These are pretty common gold battery tabs they are available from many different vendors still. Even though these ones were vintage I think you could find some.

Battery bars are a common term for what you want. Gotta believe most shops have them laying around begging for a buyer. Some quick examples:

If this is for a runner, batteries don’t like heat, suggest proper soldering technique. Good large tip iron (holds temp better), use electrical solder and flux (not plumbers), scuff the cells, pre-tin with some solder, use paste flux (not just the flux in the solder core), etc. All helps get in and get out quickly to limit the heat transfer to the cells.
