I am tryin to get my trans back together and noticed alot of end play on the top shaft. I can move the spur gear in and out. Both the inserts for the bearings for the top shaft look the same and the smaller bearing sits in kinda deep. Am I using the right part? And how can i fix it? I remember it having a little but this is alot. Im runnin a Jammin Jay dif kit in it as well. Can someone help me out?

Did you put the e clip back on the end of the top shaft?(opposite side of the spear gear)

yeah the e clip is in place. its not that obvious a solution it pushes past where the bearing is. its like the bearing is too far in the cup

Is the diff assembled correctly. Check out this thread to see if all the parts are in the right order or if any are missing.

Ill get it tore apart tomorrow and take some pics. Its like the bearing isnt out far enough and letting the shaft move in and out

sounds to me like the right diff gear isn't pressed on to the diff tube far enough.

if the gear wasn't pressed on far enough, wouldn't the assembly be too wide to fit?

no, it'd still fit. i suck at explaining technical stuff, so hopefully you can follow.......
if the gear isn't pressed onto the tube far enough, there leaves more room for side to side movement of the 1/4 x 3/8 bearing (and bearing adapter) between the hub on the diff tube and right diff gear. there'll also be less threads sticking out to install the diff nut on the topshaft because the topshaft is technically shorter (on the spur side). if the gear was pressed on further it would actually close up both sides of the topshaft at the same time.
there's also those things called "shims" that could be used to remedy the problem.

Im gonna try an shim between the bearing and diff plate to pull the whole assembly out more. I cant get the gear on any farther and dont wanna wreck a part thats so hard to find. I was tryin to get advice without shimming. I used to work at a machine shop doin the set ups so be as technical as you want i wont get confussed

when you say that you don't remember it having that much play in the topshaft, was that with the stock parts....... before installing the jammin diff parts?

I was playin with it while I was answering this post and found another gear in my stash that pressed on farther. It solved the issue for me. The tranny is a little tight but I can live with that. Thanks for the help. My Rc10 is closer to makin some noise in anger once agin. Oh Ive had this car since 88 when I bought it new. From the 25 years post its a cadillac and so was the 20 dollar parts car i bought for it 15 years ago for 20 bucks. Thanks alot for the advice guys
