I was in Banff national park with the wife on Monday. Driving through we saw a few elk. They were in rut and the males were bugling back and forth. It was very cool to hear, I have never seen that before, they were so close! You don't want to mess around these things when in rut, they will kill you!

And the thing most people don't realize is, they won't use their antlers to kill you, they'll stand up on their hind legs and stomp you with their front hooves.

Elk are magnificent animals...but like you said, don't be pulling an "ijit tourist" move and try to get close-ups with your digital cam. Haha!

yeah, and they weigh a ton!

Can't explain why, but that is one of those sounds I really want to hear in person. I think it's cool! Wife thinks I am nuts... must be some kind of fetish, maybe I am in the rut too.
