Well, Im a very happy boy today! happen to be browsing the net last week and contacted a guy on a forum about a YZ10 shell he had a picture of, after a few emails turns out he had 2 nip which I was shocked at seeing as they are so rare. 1 is a works 93 light weight shell (very thin!!) and 1 is a standard works 91 shell (same shell just thicker lexan). Now all I need to do is find a works 93 yz10 or any yz10 and I can use them!!!

the idea behind the less is more and more is less is that the less weight it has...it faster you go...in terms of speed and for the champion. So you are paying for something that weighs less and in this hobby, weighing less is key to winning. But it's kinda ridiculus because the aluminum wheel mounts on these cars alone are heavy....and if you do exotic paints like masami, it's gonna negate the whole idea of making it thin...cause thin ain't gonna take the abuse.

I was surprised by the ending of that last statement. I thought youwere gonna say the many layers of paint make it just as heavy as a standard body with a single paint layer.

On a buggy, the weight of a body is minor, if anything, to the handling and performance of the car. Maybe a little weight lowered from the CG, but that's about it.

A couple of interesting tidbits about weight and paint...


Back in the heyday of dirt oval racing, some of the Trinity and Custom Works factory guys would use bodies pulled from .020" to reduce the overall weight of the car. It was only a few ounces, but up high on a big tub of a body, it did help handling. One very famous Trinity driver and designer would also paint his bodies just black with no decals and tightly trimmed numbers. Black paint will cover with a light mist of an airbrush and add almost no weight to the body at all, while the decals and extra material used on the body (including the fasteners for the side dams and spoilers) were kept to an absolute minimum. Paint and decals adds more than a few ounces, depending on how much you use and how wild you get.

A few F1 drivers explicitly tell their helmet painters to use the lightest and thinnest paint coats to do the job, and no more. The added ounces on your head is noticed by a few—at least that's what they'd like you to believe.

From memory weight used to be everything back in the early days. Not that it still isn't in modern day racing but the thing to do back then was drill the crap out of everything in hope of reducing weight and getting more from the old 1200sc batteries of the day.
Now days I think it hardly matters so long as you meet the min weight requirements.

With the modern LiPo batteries we are finding that the cars are too light - in 2wd especially we are adding weight wherever we can to bring them somewhere about the weight of a Nicad/Nimh equipped car, having a such light car is not so much an issue on low grip tracks, but on our high grip tracks the cars tend to grip roll & be affected by bumps/rutts etc.

With the torque of the brushless motor capable of giving more power than we can handle, having a light car is no longer so important!

P.S; would still love to find a NIP YZ-10 shell of my own - in standard or LW versions

I remember the arguments that started sprouting up about lipo's being too light and this being a problem. For me I'd rather add weight where the car needs it rather than just where the battery rests.
We have got it soo good now.
