Trying to decide on a new motor.. suggestions?

Would the reedy radon 17 turn motor be good for the buggy or should I stick with 19T?

Or how about this one....

These motors are OK but you wouldnt call them a full mod motor.They have bronze bushings and fixed timing but they are cheap.I use one in a grafite RC10.Just keep the gearing down as they do generate allot of heat.

I am having a difficult time deciding what motor to do. I have been looking at 19 turn motors but really cannot seem to figure out what to go with. I know I want a ball bearing motor. Any recommendations?

Epic/Trinity 19T Komodo Dragon based motor. I run mine with Trinity heavy overhead springs and finishline "F" brushes. This was my setup for quite a while before I switched to brushless, I probably have 15 of them in motor cases still with good com diameter.

I guess it all depends on what you are using the car for? If your running the car for fun & looking for something that not only gives good 'fun' performance but lasts a decent amount of time between skims & new brushes then a 'stock' spec 19T motor might not be ideal..... these motors have alot of fixed advance timing - that not only makes the motor go faster but increases the arcing that occurs across the comm making it & the brushes wear quicker.

If you are racing - then I guess it depends upon what class you race??

I'm not really up to speed with whats available 'Brushed' motor wise - but something like a machine wound modified (cheaper) with 17 or 15 turn triple winds would be a nice motor timed on zero for street/park bashing

Brushed motors are getting harder to find, for sure.

I agree with the Komodo Dragon based 19t motors, they run great.

For a higher-end 19t, there is the Team Checkpoint "money" motor.

Also, I recommend the last generation Reedy 19t motor - called the "quad 19", it says "Reedy Spec quad 19 mag" on the can, it has flame decals (cool looking), ball-bearings, nice motor - I have one in a JRX-T and it runs awesome.

I was just talking with a friend and he said I should be more than safe with a 17.5T brushless in my 6gear tranny.

EZ-Run has a nice brushless setup that is affordable too!

Look for a motor with adjustable timing, or at the very least a removable endbell. Adjustable timing is nice to have, you can dial it back to near zero for better torque and longer life, or advance it for some more speed, but if you can remove the endbell you can cut the armature on a standard comm lathe instead of a 'stock' lathe, which gives a better cut, and are probably more popular. I just bought a lathe for $80 online, it's pretty easy to use and makes a big difference in performance.

Brushed motors are getting harder to find, but there are a lot out there if you do a little hunting. Orion/Peak still make a line, as do Epic/Trinity, and there are probably 'new old stock' in a lot of the hobby shops that are online. I bought a slew of brushes and springs for less than $1 a pair on Stormer Hobbies, just to keep me going for a while, until I decide to switch my cars over to brushless, which won't be for a while.

One thing I cannot find ANYWHERE is a comm stick. They still have those round white fiberglass sanding sticks that Parma sold as comm sticks, but I dealt with so many little splinters in my fingertips from them when I was a kid, I'll never do that again. I'd rather scrub the comm with a Q-tip and then cut the comm more often.

Ever tried using an eraser to clean the comm ??
I used the the red/blue one cut to shape, it worked, but not as good as my Trinity comm stick

I used to do that on my little HO slot cars, it just cleaned off the black stuff from the brushes, I doubt it really did anything. A section ink eraser might work, but it also might be a little too abrasive for it.

Have you ever used the sandpaper trick on a motor? I used to do it all the time, it gets a shiny surfaces on the comm, but it isn't necessarily very true (perfectly round, or slightly hourglass shaped).

Yeah I used a strip of 800grid emery cloth on some of my stock motors
or wet sanding paper

and the backside of the emery cloth with a drop of oil was used to polish the comm
Boy did we try a lot of weird stuff to get a small advantage....

I'm going to resurrect this thread since I just acquired a Komodo Dragon motor. What gearing were you guys running with them?
