They don't have separate thrust plates like the stealth does.

I have one with a ball diff, and there was an a&l slipper clutch available for them. I don't think mips came with a slipper

MIP made a slipper topshaft. In addition to ball diffs they also made gear diffs for this gearbox

Those are exactly the parts I was speaking of.

why as your layshaft got a nut on the other end.

that is the slipper top shaft. you adjust it with the nut on the side, the gear itself slips on the 2 side plates and the nut and spring provide tension.
You could probably retrofit an associated or losi slipper to the top shaft of an MIP trans, just need to bore out the slipper plate to 5mm, then use a stud and nut arrangement with the appropriate thrust bearing/washer/spring, etc. I don't know where the gear would end up, it might end up too far out on the shaft.

a little known fact, these gears can also be used in the Sand Scorcher transmission

I've never seen the inside of a sand scorcher trans but if it has an Idler gear will it work in the
SP-1?

Yes it shoudl work but keep in mind CRP made a brass ideler, the stock Sand scorcher is made of Nylon that easily shreds under power
