Retiring the VW

Post by mrlexan »

Just had to put $1100 into my wife's 10 year Beetle 1.8T, so I think it's time we pass it on to someone else. I typically don't like to hold onto cars for more than 10 years anyway. Note: WTF would VW opt to make a water pump impeller out of plastic? God only knows.

Anyway, she wants a Honda Element. Anyone have one? Likes and dislikes? Let me know. Thanks.

I would have one, but my wife hated the look of it. I talked her into letting me test drive one. They drive great in my opinion. I think they look cool too. The one we looked at could be hosed out, so with the dogs and your outdoorsiness you'd probably love it. This was several years ago, but I'm sure they're still like that. You have to drive it to appreciate it.

We looked at an Volvo XC70, REALLY liked it, but can't see dropping $45K on a car that will get dirty. Also looked at new Subaru Outback, hated it..... they seemed be getting away from their outdoorziness and moving to the luxury thing (not pratical in my book).

Element looks to be dog and dirt friendly.

My parents always told me, "Don't park your money in the driveway".

only thing you might not like on the Element is the "suicide" doors. I hate them on my extended cab truck.

'Nuff said!

Honda Elephant cars are some fugly arse car/minivan/thingies.

If you need a rig to get dirty, why not a midsized extended cab truck with a canopy on the back. Dogs and dirty things go in the back, cab stays clean with plenty of room for family and other things. With a sliding rear window you can still access the dogs and back area if necessary.

What the wife wants the wife gets.... that way I don't have to listen to her on the RC obsession.

smart money says to keep the beetle and keep fixing it. $1100 is basically three months payments on a used 15K car. I'm over the big maintenance hump with my beemer so I plan to keep it as long as possible

Last time I took into the shop (don't have the means or location to do anything myself right now), they told the engine looked like a time bomb in terms of corrosion. Keep in mind it's a Michigan car. Also just turned 100,000, so a belt is in it's near future.

100k and it looks like a time bomb? I've always heard good things about the 1.8t engines.

I have a friend who has an element, and he loves it. I have driven it a few times, and I like it too. I wouldn't having a Kia Soul either.
