hi guys.i want to get a frog but im torn between scoring a used one of the 1rst release or getting a new rerelease...what would you do?
to me a new car in the box is alway more fun to built than to refurbish a used one...i'm also thinking that by the time i put tire,body and maybe
some parts(that i risk being rere parts anyway)its gonna get expensive anyway..let me wknow guy's

What ever way you look at it the Re Realise is way better.

New plastics ( no fatigued plastics or stressed out parts)

New Diff.

New shell.

New tires and rims.

Get to build it and understand the design.

Get a speedie which is good for a sport tune and more than enough for it.

A original will be stressed and well used . If you get a good example the plastics will be fatigued from sitting all these yrs.

If you want a original shelf queen and not to be used it will still cost the same if not more than a re realise.

My thoughts anyway.

simple -- buy the re-re if you wanna build it yourself

stock up on a few pairs of front axle knuckles as the re-re ones have a habit of falling apart.
The old ones didn't; or you can JB Weld them back in too with varying success.

I've never heard of plastic fatiguing from sitting before. I can see if it was 100's of years old.

If you're looking for a runner get a re-release. If you're looking for an all original self queen (thats more respectable to display) then of course buy all original.

Buy the new one, I just redid one it cost more than the rere. you cant beat New in the Box

Yep plastic does fatigue over 20 yrs of sitting.

I had a original Hot Shot sitting on my shelf for yrs with a paint can cap supporting it of the ground. After some timethe rear arms at the connection plates just broke. If you run a 20 yr old buggy you will sooln find out a tumble will break somthing for sure.

Sun light and the atmosphere fatigue any plastic. Unless you want to wrap the car in a big zip lock bag and store it in a cupborad it will start to fatigue.

maybe not "fatigue" but UV does make it brittle with age, as does contact with oils & greases etc etc

And newbuilt shelfqueens rescued from smoker's homes... lord they stink for decades...

yes guys it does make sense...my father gave me back a monster beetle i had built him about 15 year ago as a shelfer and the frame(red abs plastic)is destroy to small pieces...its so bad that a rebuilt is out of the question

The re-re rear outdrives are updated to a dogbone design vice the old hex style. CVD's are also available for it too. I believe the rear shocks are an updated version too. For the price, I would get NIB re-re. Before you know it, you'll have way more into an older one updating parts than you would think.

In response to the re-re front axles, yes, they are not the best. On my Frog they held up the entire 2008 Vonats, but not so on the 2009 race. They simply pulled out of the casting. If you buy new, drill/tap/countersink through the back side of the spindle into the axle and throw a loctited screw in it to hold it all together. Permanently.

well,thanks to your advice guys.i score a new inbox rere frog on fleebay...can w8t to get it.i want to built it as a clean runner.maybe ultimate frog...

well it was about time.when a saw the mangled box i fear the worst but it was well packed.







off to the build now.anyone needs a tamiya speed control ??
