Optima mid question.

Post by illshou »

You guys out there still running mids, what are you doing to mount a normal 48 pitch spur gear to the trans? I can't find any pinions to fit the stocker.

I had found some oddball sized bushings a while back that fir in the bore of a Kimbrough spur gear and on the Optima Mid top shaft. I think they'd have to be about 4mm ID x 10mm OD. Also, have a look on eaby, once in a while the Robinson 48p spurs come up. I've also got a few pictures of an alternative solution but it's a little more involved ;)

I think it depends on the type of spur gear that you use.

On my mids, I usually use some type of losi spur gear for the jrx2 (I love the colors :D ) If I go this route, I use a very thin bushing that I make using some k&s brass tubing...it's that thin.

If I use a standard spur, I use a plastic bushing. I usually have something that's pretty close in diameter that requires very little modification.

I've also used an a&l slipper on my mids. I have to fabricate a top shaft using a 5mm rod. The a&l is from a losi and the holes on the slipper plates have to be enlarged slightly. A 5mm X 8mm bearing is used to replace the standard bearing on the slipper.

Unfortunately, I don't have a good picture...this pic was before I got a digital camera...2000.

trinity made a red anodized bushing for this. And Parma put 3 fluo green adapters with their bright red spurs back in the days. One adapter for the mid, one for the JR-x2 and one...never knew.
The parma spurs are still available I think but I don't know if the adaptors still come with it. The adapter is a small cilinder with flange and you put a standard metric (8x4mm?) bush in the center.
