Hyperdrive Gear Ratio and Belt Selection Guide
I thought this might be useful to someone wanting to determine the correct ratio:

Re: Hyperdrive Gear Ratio and Belt Selection Guide
Several of our members have examples of them in their extensive collections, Asso_man! and Shodog I believe the 2 of who I speak. The Hyperdrive is a cool system and I'm trying to collect as many pieces as I can in order to use them on a future build. I did just manage to score on the bay a kit for the RC10L NIP but haven't received it yet so don't know what all is in it. I don't know how good it was bitd but it sure does look cool on the shelf.

Re: Hyperdrive Gear Ratio and Belt Selection Guide
One of the drawbacks is that you need to turn the moter in the opposite direction: not a good idea if you have a fixed endbell. The timing would be opposite of what you need.
With a trackmaster you can switch the moter plate over and run the moter in its original sense. On a stealth or 6-gear you can do the same I believe, but you have to trim the moterplate. For the JR-x2 it is definitely possible to trim and swap the moterplate to the other side. (I forgot if hyperdrive even made a set for this car, but you could use an easy to find aftermarket spur adapter and use the asso spur/pulley set).
Second draw back is that either way: reversing or swapping, the rotation direction of the moter relative to the car is not considered ideal: trying to lift the rear under acceleration by its momentum.
Third drawback: the cost and complexity are much higher than your standard pinion/spur combo. You need several belts to fit a moderate range of ratios.
Fourth drawback: the belt is using rather small teeth which made it prone to slipping and quick wear; especially as the slipper wasn't introduced yet.
Best point : the sound of a beltdrive is sooo much nicer than whining gears

Re: Hyperdrive Gear Ratio and Belt Selection Guide
Good points Ed,
Your the 2nd person to mention rotation of the motor and reversing the mounting to correct this. In the picture in the ad does that not look like the normal rotational setup, so whats the problem with the application? Is it wrong the wires have to be switched to run it like that I'm confused. This is direct drive that's what you're getting at but the app in above Ad looks correct to me or same as basic stock except of the belt turning the diff pulley why would they show that and not have some acknowledgement that other changes have to be made.

Re: Hyperdrive Gear Ratio and Belt Selection Guide
gears: 2 gears touching turn in opsite sense
pulleys connected by belt: both pulleys turn in the same direction.
The ad shows the standard set-up , but this means the leads on the moter are swapped or a rare reverse moter is used ( like they made for the clodbuster.

Gotcha, just don't understand why they don't say that up front. Thanks.

Re: Hyperdrive Gear Ratio and Belt Selection Guide
With motors today being brushless (and easily reversed) this may be a product that should come back?

Re: Hyperdrive Gear Ratio and Belt Selection Guide
I heard this before, and hoped to use it in a re-design of the layout on my YZ-10 project. But then I got worried: are brushless moters not equipped with internal fans = directional? And don't they have timing also?dr_hfuhuhurr wrote:With motors today being brushless (and easily reversed)
Definitely need to get expert advise before switching the brushless leads.

Re: Hyperdrive Gear Ratio and Belt Selection Guide
There is timing but it's adjustable in both directions. At least with the Orion Motors I've used recently.

Re: Hyperdrive Gear Ratio and Belt Selection Guide
I'm pretty sure there's intenal fans and the shape of rotors is optimized for airflow in the normal direction. So sure it will work, but the better ones may suffer from less efficient cooling.
I'll try to get a definite answer from the speed passion people.

Re: Hyperdrive Gear Ratio and Belt Selection Guide
Last week I scored a formerly NIP RC10L HyperDrive kit on the bay, I say formerly because I wanted to share the instruction sheet. It states what comes in the kit right at the top left and it is still N but not IP anymore.

- the timing in BL setups is ALWAYS done in the esc
- AFAIK only some OPEN (vent holes) motors are equpped with a fan
But I wouldn't recomend any open motor design for offroad apps.
Hope this helps.

Re: Hyperdrive Gear Ratio and Belt Selection Guide
I'm sorry, but most of the high-end sensored brushless motors do have a tunable timing on the motor can!
just an example:

just an example:
