I realy don't think there is any comparison. the Optima series of cars have always been better in performance, quality (for a racer anyways) and adjustability than any of the tamiyas from that era.

As much as I love Tamiya, the Optima is a hands down better buggy.

Reliability and endurance make the turbo optima stand-out most in my eyes.

I never had a chance to drive one, so I can't say anything on the handling, but the optima held some titles at the time hotshots were already on the market

My first racer was an original Optima and after I replaced the shocks and wheels with Turbo Optima items this car was a strong and reliable car. After I fitted a belt conversion, hardened final pinion and correct 48 dp spur kit the car lasted me a couple years of racing on a very tight budget. The car never gave me any trouble and netted me plenty of trophys back in the day.
Today I own an original new built Optima for the shelf and a second fully speced out vintage racer with all the cool add ons and this car is near bullet proof. Perhaps we can pit our carsbagainst one another at a vintage meeting in the future?

I think it depends at what level racing you are talking about and how a big an issue maintenance is for you. In the mid-80s my friend had a Tamiya Fox and I had an Optima. The Optima was faster, but it required much more maintenance (and adjusting the chain was a real pain).

Yes thats very true in adjustments.

I wonder how many people played with all the adjustments though. ( werent that many either )
Gee i never new what roll centers were till a few yers ago not back in 86.

My opinion is to have a buggy with fixed camber and roll centers would have been a lot better than one that was adjustable but not equal at all corners.

Heck i had to use a set square to adjust my camber.

As a beginer racer a Super Shot would be better.

Well thats my opinion and cant wait to get my Super Shot runner up and going to give Bormacs Optima a flogging LOL...

I agree with Brandon, there was a lack of Kyosho cars at last years event. I think there was one Optima Mid that DNFed. I like to see an Ultima step up and kick the you know what out of Scr8p's RC10 just out of spite. Maybe that would convince to go over to that dark side. Ehhhh, probably not.
