Newb intro and my RC10 resto project

Post by HotRodJosh »

Hello fellas....new guy here at the forums, I hope this is an OK place to post an intro...cool site! Brings back alot of fond memories from my racing days.
A little about me...I'm 36, live in WA and getting back into RC pretty hard. I'm a mechanic, but I do alot of custom painting on the side.....hotrods, customs, R/C cars....whatever.
Currently have a Revo 3.3 and T-Maxx 2.5, as well as just gotten bitten by the scale rock crawler bug and have a few of those, as well as some boat projects.
But the main reason for signing up here is that I'm a big RC10 fan.
I grew up in AK and raced heavily with our local club in the late '80's with an RC10. Being cold outside most of the year, we raced off-road cars indoors on carpet. Cars were lowered and modified to run hard....this was before 1/10th scale on-road "pan" cars became available....although I did have an RC12E. :D
I ran stock class for a bit.....then moved up to Modified with a Revtech.
I had the first RC10L in AK, but no one else stepped up....so I continued to race my RC10, until I swithced to the "all new" JRX2. Great car....but I still liked the RC10 better....even though it wasn't nearly as fast. Pre-Stealth days...haha.
I also had an RC10 that was almost all Hot Trick.....cool stuff....
I kinda wish I hadn't gave away all of it when I moved to WA in 1990...oh well.

Anyway....here are a few pics of my old RC10 and a pic of my current project.

I just dyed all the parts blue....like my old one, and plan on building it using parts that I remember was the cool "chit" "back in the day"....

Current project.

Wasilla local track....stock class

My race setup....my dad made the foam tires on a lathe...would buy sheets of it and make up tires to sell at the track....very soft foam. We used lamp oil....it was a secret...most guys used Paragon..haha.

Another RC10 with Hot Trick parts....the other car is a 1/12th Corally that I had won in a raffle.

Big race at Diamond Center in Anchorage....Modified class.

Here's one I'm sure you fellas will dig....this is a Prototype Yokomo Super Dog Fighter(C-4/YZ-10). A freind sent me this pic from Indonesa from a big race over there. He moved there due to his father in the military. This is @ a year before the Yokomo C-4 was available here in the U.S. He would occasionally send me pics of all the "latest" stuff. The tracks over there are HUGE!

Today's progress.....I need to get a set of bearings, as this was a basic kit with the bronze bushings.

What do ya mean? Dyeing the parts was the "cool" thing to do "back in the day", white is BORING....
All my RC10's back then had dyed parts.....and I will CONTINUE to dye 'em in my restos....there will be more!

I dig the blue, better than the dingy yellow-cream with greasy-gray hi-lights (aka white). With the gold chassis, (I'm in San Diego) I'm thinking Charger power!

Welcome to the board. Love the old race and buggy pics. I like the blue dye job. My rc10 back in the day had all blue parts. Looks sweet. Keep the pics coming.

Well, I scored another RC10 this weekend, may use some of the parts . It's got some unknown trans (early Traxxas?) grafted onto the back  ....but it's got titainium turnbuckles, Houge steering and Andy's arms. The pan's been hacked on pretty hard....but may use it for a budget racer build.

Dang it Josh! You literally bought that buggy right out from under my nose! I was standing there waiting to talk to the guy and you bought that one and a top cat chassis with monster truck wheels for dirt cheap! There is always next year...Nice pickup by the way.
