That doesn't have anything to see with the slipper-clutch nor spur.
Glad you posted this pic so I can follow again.

I've never seen a topshaft like this before on an ultima: mine don't have any provision for the E-clips I see on the left side in your pic. But they all have it at the right side.

Drilling the steel axle would be out of my league, but should be do-able with the right tools.

Before you go there: did you check the shafts of the other ultima's you obtained?

cobalt drill bit will eat through the steel like a warm knife through butter.

all the other ultimas i have, have the normal 2 pin shaft.

if you use the "final pinion" with this, it works perfectly in a ultima, but no eclip mount

This slipper is the standard part for the Turbo Optima and Salute. It never came on the Ultima. But, the transmissions are pretty similar so you can swap the slipper into the Ultima.

Drilling and tapping a hole on the outer shaft sounds like a good idea. Let us know how it goes.

I'll make some pics of a shaft or 2 tonight (if I got some not mounted at least).

I took a pic of the scrap lexan that I placed to hold the bearing, it doesn't look 'trick' but it works...

So this slipper is not the same thing as the option house part I'm thinking of then?
The one I'm thinking of is a slipper clutch built into the motorpinion.
This is also the part for which you need that brownish lexan gearcover.

Thats correct, as Rich mentioned it was included with the Turbo Optima and Salute (you can check the manual to see how its assembled) but since the Ultima gearbox derived from the Optima it also fits it.
I've been running my Ultima with this setup for over a year and it really help protecting the gears. It doesn't do a very good job for traction control though, the adjustment is too sensitive.

I don't spend much on my drills; without cooling/lubricant they go blunt very fast anyway
Also don't have a benchpress or a good drill machine: just a dremel.

So here's how I would solve the problem you have:
The bearing at the motor side is now pushed in from the outside and stopped from falling into the housing by a small ridge.
Ream that ridge out and plug a flanged bearing from the inside. Then put shrink tube over the shaft to keep the falnged bearing from sliding into the housing.

That's a clever idea. Sounds like it should work.

good news, battery arrived today. fits inside perfectly with the low profile servo. doesnt even ride up on the bulkhead. mounted a couple peices of foam with shoe goo to secure it.

mounted up the electronics tonight, shoe-gooed the servo down, made a custom graphite wire hold down with aluminum spacers screwed into the bulkhead, got to solder the motor still, but its lookin good

took off those black shocks, didnt like the feel when i took for test ride. polished some beat up gold shocks, feel way better. used a couple of unknown alloy shock collars i polished

Have you tried putting an assodriver in the cage?

Maybe that, and a flat piece to close the top off are all you need

I'm playing with the idea for a hotshot-ultima now

Pitty the servo has to get an ear clipped to fit sideways huh. I've never used shoe-goo so don't know how strong it really is.
Instead I've put some extra double sided tape and sandwhished a little brace under the top-deck

on a yok mx4, you used to have to cut both servo ears to mount the servo, all you needed to hold it in place FOREVER was shoe goo.. it does come off pretty easily with a flat screw driver when your done.

only downside is it takes overnight to dry
