Steve, Did the '84 box car have any decals on top of the wing?

Out of interest, from a photography point of view..

Can you explain the process that was undertaken to shoot the cover(box) pic? Was ther much post production work done on it? Its obviously been done under studio conditions so I wondered if you mounted it(car) in the air somehow and spun the wheels by hand to give the illusion of speed. I'm guessing that at that time Photoshop wasn't around!

That was shot before my time and indeed in a professional studio. Roger Curtis, who started Associated Electrics before Gene came along, used the services of designer and friend Chris Chan for his early print advertising and box art. Chris in turn secured the services of a studio to create the box-top photo. So I am unfamiliar with the studio shoot itself.

When I came on board twenty years ago, computers were a new thing. Printers were dot-matirx ugly - where the shading dots were as big as barns - and were entirely unlike the photo-quality, sophisticated machines in use today. I would create the nuts and washers to 1:1 scale in Micrographx Designer (Adobe was not around yet), and save those same-scale drawings as EPS. I would open Aldus PageMaker, type in the manual instructions (which were written by the late Topper K), drop in the EPS drawings of the hardware so the reader will select the correct part, and leave a black box for each photo. We gave the negatives and print output of the pages containing text to the printer and he combined them, dropping the negs into the space occupied by the black box, and printed the manuals. It was very time-intensive work for him. Now, of course, we can combine computer work and digital photography with ease.

With the earlier process, we had to wait until a car's parts were manufactured before we could shoot photos for the manual. With the advent of CAD systems, we are able to create our manuals while the parts are being manufactured. This digital process shortened the time to get the product to market.

Being a n00b for RC10's if I could ask Gene some questions they would be:

What cars did you look at, evaluate and tear apart when designing the original RC10?

What was the #1 car you were shooting to eclipse with it at the time?

Biggest mistake in the RC-10, or with the Associated company all together. It's fairly open question.

On what date did the RC10 first ship to retailers? Feel free to research this.

I'm hoping for something a little more substantial than "1984"...
