In the 90s the JR Apex 40mhz car radio was by far the most popular in the UK. It had two channels on the sticks, with the third channel being proportional on a small knob at the top left. It should look something like this, without the Losi stickers.

It's a 5v DPDT relay. Fairly common in UK ESCs from the 70s right through to the 90s as it's a simple and cheap way of switching into reverse instead of having 4 sets of FETs that are used today.

Some very early ESCs, such as the Demon 2 Turbo from 1979, used a relay to switch at full throttle, mainly because it used a single transistor for speed control and the relay had a lower resistance than the transistor. This only lasted until they started using multiple transistors and eventually FETs meaning they now had a lower resistance than a relay.

so, this is most likely a reverse esc then? i was kinda worried about that when i first saw it, but din't want to miss it either. it's not like there's tons of info out there about old nosram stuff to refer to.

looks like a few of their esc's were reverse going by the back of the package.

I just figured it was a high speed relay cause why would scr8p have a reversing speed control  I guess now we know 8)

Hi Jason,

I have attached a number of pictures of Rory's RC10 frm the 1991/92 season with the shell you are hoping to recreate.

I hope they help,

Luke

The bottom picture is;

10, Rory Cull
2, Steenari
7, Jamie Booth
1, Steve West
8, Phil Davies
9, ?
4 is a Furutani shell but don't think he was at the meeting. This is a heat from the 1992 EFRA British GP at Southport.

no big update (go figure  ), but i got a set of rcps turnbuckles for this from mike. gotta give them a little cleaning up, but i'll get to them sooner than later. these were really the only thing keeping the car from being a roller. well, more than a roller actually. i should have everything to finish the car except the correct receiver, a body, and misc. stickers.

Looking through this thread to compare with a JR receiver I have, I came across this post:

But I'm sure Jamie Booth has a small part in that
it will never happen again. those were dark days. lol
This years 2WD Worlds
1. Kyosho
2. Tamiya
3. Associated
I guess that didn't take long then.

Messed around with this here and there over the last few days. Nothing major. Assembled and installed the tie rods and steering bellcrank. I can't find any evidence that rory used anything but the stock setup from the pics I have seen of his other cars. So I figured I should just use it in this car as well. I modified the battery box like ones on his other cars, and installed the jg a-main bumper, too.

I also pulled the rear bulkhead back out the tub to slim the sides down. I took it down to worlds width. I didnt want to go too far and regret it if better pics show up somewhere down the road. I know I'm close, I may just have to remove that last row of holes. I also countersunk the mounting holes on the tower in preparation for the esc.
20140115_114631.jpg
I still have to rebuild the shocks. I keep forgetting to pick up some rebuild kits. Also unsure about a trans brace, whether it should be carbon or nylon. I guess I could get the esc rewired and get the electronics installed too. Still have to come up with a receiver, but I have everything else. Oh, and make a battery hold down. Not sure if its carbon or fiberglass though....

Looks great Jason 8) your camera shoots the color pretty well too, not an easy thing-

Switch the tires to HT ribs and you've got the Chamberlin replica
