Really busy weekend for me so I didn't get too much done on the car. I really can't do much anyway until my supplies for the body come in. Next week I should really have something to show.



I couldn't find a suitable rear wing for this car so I decided to make my own from hard aluminum sheet. It's basically a copy of the large RC10 wing that's just a bit wider.


I made the side panels from lexan as they will be painted. This will also keep the main wing from being damaged during minor accidents. The side panels will be trimmed in length once I find out how much travel the suspension will encounter.




Wish I could have done more this week but at least I've made some kind of progress.

Nah! Most of the stuff I do happens through happy accidents. You should see all the junk parts I make before coming up with a good one.

No update this week until I get more done.

The body construction is going well but slow. Lots of tricky stuff to deal with on the body.

Briefly set my builders mat on fire with the torch so I'll be needing to replace that soon.

The 1/18 shocks are out again due to the new springs not fitting. I ordered the set of Associated pan car shocks that gomachV linked and they should do the trick. More to come next week.

I'll give you just a peek at what I'm doing. Shop is at disaster level three so no more pictures.

so I have the dimensions of the springs I have, and a part number.

They are made by jones spring company, stock #13. really, that's all the part number they show.
OD is 0.437". ID is something like 0.355" Length is 2.25" wire diameter 0.041" Bright silver in color with closed ends. I have to dig up the force in lb's but it's sufficient for holding up a fully loaded grasshopper, if not a little stiff. let me know if you want them.

It's worth a shot and I actually have another build that will use those type of shocks. I don't mind stiff springs for this type of car since it's been basically turned into a pan car. I'll PM you shortly on the springs.

Thanks guys! I guess I'll show off a few more shots since I was out cleaning up the disaster in my garage. Keep in mind these are all rough cut parts an not the final product.

I'm using Plastruct styrene sheet for the body. I'm also using angles and block tubing to build in support structures like a model airplane would incorporate. Bondene is used to melt the parts in place. Your best source for these materials will be Tower Hobbies.


Lots of things will need to be trimmed out for clearance. Finding out where things will hit and correcting them is what makes this a slow process. You can see I need to make more clearance for the rear arms in this photo. I'll be using drafting templates to make neat oval holes for the nerf bars to pass through.


Battery access showing braced hood. I made it where it basically holds itself down so only two small screws will be necessary to lock it.


Not much room in this car for anything! The servo and battery will use up most of this space. I'm thinking I'll mount the receiver on the rear bulkhead and the speed control will be mounted under the engine pod for cooling.


Braces added to the stealth mount per THUNDERSTIRKEs suggestion. I still need to trim down and round off the squashed tubing ends and solder them shut.


Looks like a supermod to me. Naked on one side and a huge big block on the other. Got lazy and stole the headers from my Losi Slider. I'll be turning the slider into a modified anyway so it wont need them.


I'm going to replicate the big square filter housing like car 33 has. Much easier than making the separate flutes.


Final shot showing the minimal profile. The wings will be the only thing to cause drag on this baby.

Just stopped in to say I'm still on this thing. I've been crazy busy at work and short on hobby time so the project has suffered a bit. I should be back to my normal schedule soon so regular updates will return in a few weeks.



I've made lots of revisions to the car including this new front suspension. I cut my own nose plate from .060 aluminum and I'm using beam type front suspension mounts with a 1/4" solid 6061 aluminum shaft. This made the car very light and gave it a more realistic look. I will also be using a standard pan car servo mount instead of the RC10 bellcranks. The brass cage will be chopped off in front of the new suspension and altered further. The car has the same track and wheel base as it had with the arms. I've also decided the entire chassis and motor plate be sanded smooth and polished once I get to the detailing stage.


Prototype trans cover. The improved version will be lower and have fairing over the rear bumper. The rear bumper may be shortened too. More to come!


The new front suspension will allow the body to be raked like I had originally wanted so I have a lot of cutting and shaping to do.
