One was a cartoon, probably some of the first Japanese Anime to hit the states. There was 5 or 6 people and they had machines that could combine together to make one large robot.

I use to love that cartoon. Still do I guess. I am surprised I found it but I still can't find the other. One of my office pals seems to remember the glowing red light bulb swinging in a dark room having something to do with the Tale of the Outer Limits being remade in the 80s but I can only find the original and the late 90's revision.

Still looking though. I did find one that looks cool and is based on a similar theme. It is part of Steven Kings "Nightmares and Dreamscapes" and is called Battlefield. I seem to recall reading something years ago from him that was similar. Part of a collection called Gray Matter or something like that.

I went through them all and unfortunately it was not there. This show would have been earlier, maybe 81-83ish. Thanks for the link though. Those look like good flicks.

Welcome to the board by the way.

I finally found the show I am looking for. After 10 plus years of this burning in the back of my mind, I can finally sleep at night.
The show was called "Darkroom" and aired from '81-'82

I did have a host which I thought it did not. The host was James Coburn. The show was 60 minutes long and ran for 16 episodes. The particular episode I am looking for is called "Siege of 31 August"

It is a tale of a Vietnam vet who is attacked by his sons toy soldiers. I am sure it looks like crap by todays standards. But I gotta find the video.
