Thanks for the memory refresh. That's a fairly early chart because the Blue frequency isn't even listed. As I recall the 72MHz frequencies were dual-use, so the ones that weren't dedicated to aircraft could be used for surface or aircraft, which made them riskier than 27MHz. Radio problems were pretty common back then! At the 1981 ROAR Nationals at Rattey's Raceway I had to use a giant antenna on my car just to keep my car from glitching.

It's so much easier today with the new radios.

The build is looking amazing.

So even back when these radios were new guys were having trouble. What radio were you using back in 81? Thanks for sharing the history with us too. I was a ten year old in 81.

Waaaaaaay behind schedule on this car due to..........ahhhh.......the nature of the hobby? Yeah that's it! Actually I fell behind due to one of my servos being dead. When I powered everything up the throttle servo didn't budge. Unplugged it and tried it in the steering slot and still wouldn't budge. Took it out and apart and tested the cable which turned out good. Tested the circuit board and found it to be fried! Luckily the old three prong Futaba servos seem to share components. I rummaged through my junk pile and found an old S28 that looked like a good transplant candidate. Unfortunately the board components on the S28 were even clunkier than the old FP-S17 and it wouldn't quite fit in the case. Did some more digging and found a beat up old S32 (I think it was anyway). The board on this servo was an exact match so I transplanted it and the old FP-S17 works good as new now. After that I took a couple of days off! :P

This made me forget my servo troubles and other hardships. Still need to rejet the carb but I'm happy with it so far. Another RC12E comes back to life. :)

Ended up having to go with the FP-R2GS. Using an old Magnum Sport to run it. Negative cable for the battery plug is disconnected in this photo as I'm using my test battery.
Image

Not bad for a partial car and a box of left over parts. The wire connected to the wiper is not Associated but it is vintage. It's 13 gauge.
Image

Please excuse the crappy test battery it's just on there for the run up. This car is going on the shelf after the build and the battery will be replaced with a dummy unit.

Still a lot of work to do on the body.

And here is a crappy video of me mindlessly gunning the throttle.

Always enjoy your builds!

Your cars look like you could lick them and not worry about catching anything!

Dragging myself back out to the garage tomorrow to pick up where I left off. Hopefully I can get the paint work finished over the next few weeks and build up a dummy battery pack I bought supplies for. After this another RC12E I have will be brought back to life.

Just stumbled across this thread. Awesome work PlastiZapCA+
Some of the white plastic parts, did you restore them to this condition or are they new? I am not referring to the bumper or radio tray.

Thanks! The white parts were restored. I soaked the parts in hydrogen peroxide to get them white again. I usually scrub them with hand cleaner for an initial cleaning. Then I put them in clear plastic bowls filled with hydrogen peroxide out in the sun. I usually let them soak that way for several days depending on how yellowed they were before.

Here is a thread on the topic:

Another amazing restoration of another favourite pan car of mine. Whatever happened to the shell?
