Am I reading this correctly> At age 5 the DOCTOR made you Dad start smoking?? And his parents agreed with that??

[quote="Tadracket"]Talk about a tough habit to kick. My dad is 62 and his doctor put him on cigarettes at age 5 for asthma. His lungs near collapsed last Christmas and he quit cold turkey, for 3 months :( .

Hope it's going ok Hoopty. I quit this weekend. I spent all Sunday thinking about smoking  However I managed to go to the store on Sunday night and not buy cigs which really helped me get over some of it, although I did buy beer

Fingers crossed I can keep it up and I am hoping you can do it too...good luck buddy.

This was back woods West Virginia in 1950. They did not know any better.

Dad said what was funny was this little 5 year old kid walking around in a one room school with a pack of smokes rolled up in his shirt sleeve and a doctors excuse to do it. He was the envy of the entire school house.
He's an idiot. Comes from upbringing. His parents are probably idiots too.

At the age of 9 my Dad and his sister (my Aunt) were told they needed to learn to smoke by their parents. They were given a selection of smoking paraphanalia and told to take their pick and go into the garden and learn to smoke. My Dad chose cigars and my Aunt picked a pipe. Neither have smoked for the past 30+ years.

Back in the day smoking was prescribed for many ailments one of the most common (and still in practice in poorer countries) is as an antidote to pain caused by stomach problems e.g. ulcers and the like, as cigarrettes relax the body...
