I don't know the exact diameter of my solder, but it's about 1mm thick. Probably at least 2 - 3 times as thick as the crap that came with the station.
I just checked my solder diameter, it's about 0.8mm, I was a bit off. But I know it's significantly thicker than the stuff that came with my solder station. That stuff I chucked out, it looked like that wire you hang pictures on your wall with.

Our old Wellers were practically the same unit. Yours was 40W, mine was 35W. So, did you have a chance to try out your new one? What were your impressions?
It's about a year later but I've finally started using it quite a few times over the past 2 or 3 months. I'm also quite impressed for a $50 unit, heats up much faster than I imagined when first buying it and solders quite well and easy in my opinion. I can finally make really nice clean welds (also due to Kester "44" rosin core solder). Before having this station I use to hate when it came time to solder, but now I actually enjoy it.

I used to have a Lenk iron that used those threaded tips. They were ultimately its undoing, as the heating and cooling eventually galled the threads.

Two years two months later, I'm still very pleased with this inexpensive unit.

I concur, mine also has done very well over the past few years. I had to buy some new solder tips but other than that, it's worked flawlessly.
