You've inspired me Dan, I've just bought a 2wd Losi 'project' car, I think I'll get it up and running and see if I can race against the modern cars.

Oh, it's a JRX2, what are my chances?!

Cool - thats going to be my next racer project too - hopefully going to build build two 5 link cars, 1 for myself & 1 for a friend.

Actually on Milton Keynes' tight indoor track I reckon a SWB car with H arm would go great!

Great! Will post some pics when I get chance, as it's mostly JRX2, but with JRX pro chassis and shocks. Would like it to be 100% standard JRX2, as it came with a new unpainted JRX2 shell.

Raced the old XX again on Saturday over on Hinckley Model Car Clubs grass track for one of their regular club meetings;

Some pics of the track - I believe its the 'B' final that is in progress, as the guy who took the shots TQ'd & won the A final!







The qualifying was done by the round-by-round method & two 3rds in round was enough to secure 4th on the grid O/A for the A final - the final was a bit of a disaster, being taken out on the first bend, which put me into last place - so to work my way back to 5th was a reasonable effort.

I must admit I was full of hope for this meeting as I thought the traditional UK grass track would suit rear motor layout of the XX better, but alas due to the recent prolonged wet weather the grass was thick & fresh so grip levels were nice & high.... again suiting the mid-motored cars. Looking at the three drivers in front on thr grid I knew that two of them I could probably have given more of a 'run for their money' if I had been running my CR2. The guy who TQ'd & won the A (Dean) was running a Centro 4.1 - now he lapped me in all but one of the qualifying runs, & when I let him through I just couldn't keep on his trail you could really tell where the mid-motor layout of his car was helping.

Neat grass track. Never thought of racing on grass.

Grass tracks were the norm here in the UK..... in the past decade or so many/most clubs have converted to astroturf which is far more hard wearing & consistant throughout the race day, but for me I love, the progressive characteristic grip levels that you get with grass.

I raced at the Milton Keynes' 'Telstar' club again on Weds night but on their alternative outdoors grass track.... which due to the hurrendous weather we've had this summer has only been raced on once before this season!

My mate was also running his B3 - with which I think we need to sit down & sort out the suspension cos it was handling like a pig!


Pleased with third.... again a story of consistant running rather than outright pace, the winner Lloyd is a national A finalist so a very handy racer!!


One thing that was very satisfying was that our final was raced in the cool evening just before dusk so the grass was getting wet with the dew - more so as the race went on. The mid motor cars were really started the struggle (except for the front two it would seem ) But my rear motored car didn't seem to feel any different!

Great to see a XX put it to those mid mount buggys. I have found the XX to be far bettter on a loose surface then any mid mount. Handles the rough better too. I ran my XX for a few yrs later on after the XXX came out. Never liked the XXX even though I raced every updated version . The XXX CR was the best but I kept going back to the XX.

One thing that I did do is run the entire XXX tranny on the XX. All bolted straight on. The motor is tucked up closer to the axles for a little more corner grip. BK used this set up when testing the new tranny layout on hix XX.

Well done really nice to see its working out with the XX. Looks like you made the 4th hole in the rear arms? That should help a little on the high bite tracks your running.
Soon i'll be posting my build tread of the XX runner because i finally found a roller. Jippie..
I noticed mine has a swaybar installed in the rear. It should reduce body roll on high bite tracks maybe thats also an option you can try..

I love traditional UK grasstracks, it's a shame they're slowly dying out My own home track is now 50/50 astro/grass, so most of the time the mids win over the rears, except in the rain, which is often

Great to hear that you've got yourself a XX for running.... they seem to be having their 'moment' in the vintage popularity stakes, a few months ago you couldn't give spares/old cars away... now it seems certain hard to find parts & whole cars are commanding high prices - which in some ways is a shame, but i'm sure you'll have lots of fun with yours.

Yes I have done the 4th hole mod - i've also made whole in between holes 3 & 4 as the shock looked rather close to the wheel when in the very outer hole when using the wider XXX rims - with the XX wheels the 4th hole position is fine. Moving the bottom of the shock does seem to stop the roll & help the rear 'swing' more coming into a corner. I do have a NIP roll-bar kit which I have contemplated using to enhance even more the effect that the 4th wishbone hole has made - I used to run the roll bar on tight indoor/carpet tracks Bitd, but I did want to save the parts I have for a car that i'm planning to build from a NIB kit.

Anyway - I raced again last night, at the outdoor track shown in the pictures in my last post, I qualified 6th having had to pull out of the 2nd run after some carpet (that covers the ramps) got lodged around the spindle of one of the front wheels locking it up Come the final, on a damp track after a couple of rain showers & it getting close to being dark, I managed to scrape another 3rd place finish - the rear motored car going well on the slippery track, indeed until a silly mistake on my part in the closing stages of the race I was right up with the two leading cars & challeging

This is how dark it was as the SC Trucks lined up in the last final directly after my A Final 2wd race;



& the only problem with running on grass - it gets messy when it rains

P.S; its worth mentioning my mate with his Associated B3 - he missed out on the A & 'polled' the B final - but duly stamped his authority & won the race..... but with a time that would have put him 4th a few seconds behind me in the A final!

Got another XX from a fellow racing buddy... it looks pretty beat up with that shell but its not quite as bad as it looks & few nice parts on it - that I can transfer onto the Kinwald which will allow me to put the mid-motored CR2 back together (its like a game of musical parts!)

Not too shabby for £20!


I will try & keep it as an assembled car but it will primarily provide spares if required for the racer.

Looks good! We need to keep stockpiling these spares...
