well.....to put that one to rest before it becomes a rant, a transmission is any device that has multiple elements for transferring power, whether it be mechanical or electrical. It just so happens common convention with gasoline engines needs multiple gear ratio changes. You can have a single speed transmission, such as a servo gear train. Single speed, many interfaces to reduce the speed. Still a transmission.

as for motor vs engine. A motor is a device that translates one form of energy to another with the main goal to provide mechanical motion. An engine is also a device that translates one form of input to another output form but more generic. So a motor is a specific kind of engine used for rotational motion.

Engine is a IC (Internal combustion)

Motor is electric.
