Nope it has a pulley and bearings as well as redesigned case to accommodate it without a lexan shield.

One point to make about the optima idler is that it uses a bushing set up that can bind up. Not sure the size but you can replace the bushing with flanged bearings and make life easier.

As far as the little lexan cover goes, while it may be a pain to install, it keeps dirt out of the gears. Both optimas were known for issues of dirt and gravel getting into the gearbox and chewing up gears. I made a cover out of aluminum for mine and a little rtrv silicone for good measure.
