Yeah it makes a real difference, especialy to the rear diff as this is where most of the dirt ends up when it gets inside. Its almost as though the diff grease is magentic- LOL!

Looking forward to seeing this thing bolt around in the later model class.

Its freaking groundhog day!!

I dont know how - but the front diff was alot worse than the rear in terms of needing the rebuild.

Actually, the front end was worse full stop. I had to put new drive-shafts in - they old ones are only good for "desperate spares"! All the bearings were seized etc etc.

However, its not all bad. I am now really starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel. With the gearbox and suspension back on the chassis along with the rear gearbox and suspension - I can see it starting to take shape and be something I will be proud to put on the track.

I have really tried to re-use as many parts as possible in this resto, using every bit of "restorative" skill that I can muster to get this "Doggy" growling again! So far all I have "retired" are the bulkhead caps - front, rear and centre. Front universal driveshafts. Complete bearings. Rear diff pulley and a few screws here and there.

I have used a bit of creative engineering on the steering bell-cranks as I was too "tight" to bust open my new in packet steering set! I took a long metric screw from a Schumacher CAT (GOD FORBID!!) and set up spacers for the right hand belcrank so it could run on bearings. Its not "factory" looking - but has resulted in the steering being really smooth and slop free. I will most likely replace some of the ball ends on the car as they are getting a little tired - however for the most part the car is coming together really well - just alot of work.

I am really starting to enjoy the build now - I have some parts coming from all over the world at the moment to help finish it all off.

On the weekend I will be starting on the 93's younger brother - the 870C which is in another build thread - should not be as bad......but I seem to pick the "hard lifer's"

Anyways - got a Q for you... what's up with that blue color on the diff ring- did you use sandpaper or something to prevent any slippage???

Hey Paul,

I think you mean the "discs" I made from chassis protector for keeping the dirt out of the diffs. We used to do it back in the day (I actually used margarine container lids or thin lexan). It looks blue, but it is actuallyclear/opaque.

Darryn - got it - diff covers. I do them differently with two self-adhesive vinyle discs that have different diameters. Understood

That sounds like an even better idea!!

I actually just did these quickly, as I am now starting to think I might make this runner a bit more special.......If I am going to run it, I want to run it like I used to back then, so I might bust out the Suzuki driveshafts and other goodies!!

I have pretty much put the brakes on this project for a little bit as parts are souced to complete the build - most notably the body shell at this moment!! Hopefully Jay will get enough people wanting another re-pop - I know I want at least two!!

It should look and drive pretty well when it is done. I am also going to be adding some suzuki driveshafts and hubs I think - just to give it a bit of bling - will probably add RPM ball cups and other goodies here and there.

Darryn you have inspired me to get my 93 works out for a rebuild,nice work,is that body shell in the first pic the original?Mine has a parma body and I really dont like it.Id been keen for a repo shell and under tray too.Hint Hint

Yeah - they are a very nice buggy for sure. I too am going to bust out some Suzuki gear and other bling bits - it just has to go hard-core racer now. I am hoping to build a good looking reliable vintage runner with a bit of bling to boot.
