Digging up an old topic here but since I was fighting my retro fit transmission for my LXT today (and won!!!) I thought I'd post a few other things to watch out for.

1. Don't try to use the inner top shaft bearing (3/16 x 5/16) in the differential (5 x 8 mm). It won't work even if it looks like the bearings are the right size. Measure twice, test fit another couple of times then assemble. To test fit without trying to assemble the diff at the same time, just try both bearings on the aluminum diff tube to see if they fit. If so, you're good.

2. The aluminum top shafts are anodized and if you try to assemble the trans with the provided aluminum top shaft spacer, it will bind. I ended up needing to thin the spacer almost a full 3mm in order to get everything to go together without binding. It's still a tight trans if I tighten the screw right above the top shaft but backing that screw off a 1/4 turn the trans spins nicely. I hope after I run it that it will free up even more.

You guys are right about the diffs being super touchy, that's going to drive me nuts I think. There's gotta be a way to adapt a proper thrust spring into the assembly. Guess that's the next project.

I've been wanting to pick up a Double-X retro gearbox but have only held off due to budget. Judging by this thread it seems like I should just keep the stock gearbox instead. My XX is so much smoother though. There must be something very different between them inside if the retro isn't that smooth.

i noticed the same thing. no matter what, the aluminum top shaft would bind up the tranny. i ran 3 4-cell packs (on the bench) through the tranny before it freed up some, but it never ran as free as the steel top shaft.
