To Drill or Not To Drill?

If you plan on running it with newer motors/esc's, drill it, run the stealth and dont look back. Shelf queen: wet sand the chassis and leave the 6 gear in it.


My gut says you plan on running it.....

I think I am leaning more towards running it than sitting it on a shelf. Sure I will sit it on a shelf eventually, but it was made to have fun with, so I will do that first.

My gold pan is also my scapegoat, it's being looked at just as closely, but will remain original. I even got the body painted to the design on the box, yet i have no idea how to get some of the decals.

Having said that, I think I have made my mind up, but I still have to wait 5 or 6 weeks still til I get back home to do anything...it's killing me

if you do a nice job drilling and countersinking the stealth holes, and while your at it countersink the 2 holes at the rear of the chassis for the motor guard, no one will ever know it started life as a 6 gear.

you're gonna need an 82 degree countersink drill bit for the 4-40 screws. any hardware/home improvment store should have them in stock.

using a drill press will be the best way to keep the countersinks straight and consistant. use one of the factory countersunk holes that are already in the chassis to mark your depths so they're all the same.

hey thanks ...I was anticipating getting some lip from people over that question. lol, you were the first to reply, so I could still get it yet

Don't feel dumb about a question like that...if you went on without asking and used a 1/2" drill bit to countersink all the way thru a graphite chassis then you would be dumb ...drill it, do it right and run the snot out of it. I respect your asking for advice...

Seriously, the folks here are helpful and very willing to answer questions. I just didn't want to chime in with the 'drill it! drill it!' chant--- although I was tempted. I fall into the runner category btw- I can't stand to see my stuff too clean.

Also I get withdrawals from my rc if I go a day or two without doing anything-- next time out for your job can you bring something with you? Consider a 1/36 (Micro-T) or a Mini Crawler. I know they're not gold or graphite, but you can run them in your room!!

I haven't left town without one of them in the last 6 months. Every time i go home i bring one out and continue the restoration process, in fact I'm still messing around right now.

I wanted the original rims for my goldpan, so I found some on ebay, so I have taken the painted black ones off of it and set the white ones from my graphite aside and used the black ones to match the paint job I did. Makes sence, long sentence is all. Anyway, I have my graphite with me and was tired of looking of the paint on the wheel, so I have stripped them with Trichloroethylene (a geological solvent to test for hydrocarbon), worked well. I am going to dye the rims with Rit dye as soon as I get to a town to buy it.

I think an Axial AX10 Scorpion is in the future for me to play with at work

just soak those wheels in Castrol Super Clean for a few days it should clean them up.

interesting - wet sanding the chassis? Won't it look dull after that? wetsanding flattens but take the mirror finish away... or do you clearcoat it again after that???
