I raced a lot from about 1985 to 1990, pretty much every weekend and sometimes during the week!
- By far the most frequent racing was 1/10 off-road, multiple RC10s, and a brand-new JRX-2 when it came out.
The first model I ever raced was a Tamiya Falcon!
- Also raced many times on dirt oval - I had a great run of races with a Tamiya BigWig on dirt oval! (ran a Kyosho 360PT motor and a 7-cell  )
- A few rounds of 1/10 and 1/12 carpet on-road (Bolink and a Tamiya 1/12 model)
- And a very few rounds of asphalt on-raod (MRP GP-10!)

I did not engage in any R/C from around 1990 to 2002 - I graduated high-school in 1992.

In 2002 I bought an RC10T3 (seems like it was a built roller??, if memory serves), and raced that just a few times.

After 2002 I collected crap-tons of vintage R/C stuff from eBay (so much stuff... cuz it was dirt-cheap).

I discovered RC10Talk around 2008-2009 - but I did not make it to VONats until 2019. So I did not race at all 2002 to 2019.

I have been to VONats every year since, except for 2023 because I busted my fat-ass on an electric scooter...
- There is no 1/10 racing anywhere near me, so I just try to go to as many vintage races (all out-of-state) as I can afford.

I researched a bit - this was the version of RC10T3 I bought in 2002:
- 2001 Assembled Versions:
- #7009 RC10T3 Team- Built (ARR) - less radio system and electrical, with bushings and wheel ball bearings

I can't find a picture, but I don't think it came with a body?
Or if it did, the body was not painted.

Raced the Eagle a bunch, outdoor track at the LHS (R/C Plus!) around '90-'92. They also had a little indoor offroad track (the door behind the counter covered by hinged pegboard). Always stock motors and unmatched batteries. Then '92-'93 raced the TRX-1 Friday nights on that little indoor track.

Something about dirt, tires, motor spray, solder flux, hot electronics smells all mixed together...you know what I'm talking about. If it was a candle scent it would be called "at the track".

Took a break '93-'96. Knew a guy from work and he and his brother (not the Cox Bros!) raced trucks at that same LHS! So, sometime in '97, I picked up a T3 Team Truck and we hit the track pretty much every Sunday for a couple seasons. Always stock motors but I had a little more coin and got some nice matched batteries and a Tekin peak charger. It was three heats and a main, so I had a couple of SCR packs for practice and 4 packs for the races. Never super serious but taken seriously, if that makes sense.

Then fast forward to Fall 2016, and I just caught a few vintage class Tuesday night club races at that same LHS (indoor turf at that point)

Nothing since. Good times for sure though. And R/C Plus! is still there. The original owner, Ron, sold it and retired a couple years ago. I think they just sucked up another space there in the complex. Not sure what they're plans are for it. Crawlers or an on-road track, drift track? I guess I'll have to stop by next summer!

Very true. I recently bought some discontinued tires off eBay, NIP. When they arrived they smelled like a clay track and that they had been sitting in a back storage area there for a decade. That perfect smell of musty mold and dirt earned over time. I looked up where they came from and it was a track, must have found some new old stock to sell. The smell filled my house and I loved it!

If you add a little BoLink wintergreen tire tack and cigarette smoke to that candle...it would scream early '80's.....and I'd buy that to burn in the workshop every once and a while...when the wife ain't home

Truth. Clay tracks were always that musty/damp/dirt/cigarette combo scent (sometimes mixed with high-school like cinderblock aroma) and carpet tracks were always wintergreen/paragon.

I'm trying to develop a gunpowder scented candle for the shooting community- if you've ever advanced on a course of fire through your own burnt gunpowder cloud, you get it. Might have to try the RC candle too- wives will hate them

my only 2 races were the first 2 vintage nats. first one was fun as hell as it was mainly just dudes from here getting together and havin fun. 2nd one was a bit more of an actual competitive event and wasnt as fun, but im not at all a good tuner or driver.

always did pretty well competitively in scale 4x4 sorrca events, which is basically the opposite of gofast racing and more solo/slow technical stuff. pretty much lost my rc10 mojo after gettin into sorrca and the scale 4x4 stuff.

i was ripping my jrx pro se and later an lxt around sandlot and such around 95 before I started racing around 99. First new car was a XXXT MF that i raced on before indoor carpet and outside on dirt. Went through several different classes till i went on haitus around 2009 when work\life got too busy. Got back into it 2022 after i made the mistake of testing a XXX4 I was going to sell at a turf race ended up buying a B6 4 and also entered a bank account crippling hobby of rebuilding old RCs.

There’s nothing that smells better than when you are shooting a USPSA or an IDPA match and you advance through the cloud of powder especially when you’re in the zone and get a perfect score.

I miss going to work now after reading this.
