You also can't stress enough that we had no internet only magazines ( radio race car and model cars monthly in the UK ) so for most people at a local club level aftermarket parts were harder to come by and as a kid they were expensive as well so far from common , certainly at my school club even a Tamiya black motor was quite something !
Batterys also were nothing like today , I remember dominating an A final with my hotshot only for the battery to drop off 1 lap from the end and having a hornet pass me feet from the line . A light weight car could be geared much higher than a heavy one giving a big speed advantage and longer battery life , with the old nicads you really were on the edge of your seat hoping it would last a 5 min race.

Interesting, i never considered that the frog was a race car. We all know that the rc10 won the worlds in 85, but did the frog or scorpion win any major races around that time?
Not around that time, but Brandon Giles (a member here) built a Frog for the Vonats a few years ago.
I can't find the video clip of his race, but I was in disbelief that it was a Frog
He had that highly modified Frog dialed in and not bouncing around the track. It was an impressive win
