Problem with kyoshos 48p gear is that it's metric 48p. Robinson and thorp both had sets iirc but I don't know how well they held up
I saw talk on here about using a traxxas 32p cluster gear #1884, just re drill the hole and use the shaft that comes with the traxxas gear. Not sure what the ratio ends up at tho but the gear and shaft runs about $3. Lot better than $25+ on eBay

Thorp are close to 70. Didnt find any Robinson. I ran one or the other when I get into the way back machine, never had issues with durability using an 11X3 Twister

So here's a solution to the cluster gear for all other Ultima and Optima guys needing the gear..
Traxxas PN1884 from the hawk/sledgehammer/bullet. The gear takes (2) 5X11 bearings. It is a 44t main gear/20t secondary. This changes your ratio with the stock counter gear to 2.73. The gear comes with a tapped 5mm shaft, you just have to drill your motor plate a new hole ~.75 (maybe an extra .0625 or so mine meshed to tight.) from the center of the top shaft. You can also use the 26t counter from the Thorp OD set, and I don't think you'd have to drill a hole at all. That outside setup is 26/20 - 2.54 ratio.

This is another nice solution, but finding one of these may be alittle tougher...Its a robinson gear adapter for the hawk/sledgehammer. You still have to drill the hole or use the robinson 26t counter gear.

Just so this old mind remembers, the stock FDR is 3.14, your saying with these 2 set ups I can drop that overall, or are you just quoting the "outside" ratio? If I drop a 17.5 in there, the lower FDRs are a blessing.
I wonder if there is a 30t 32p pinion.....

The original FDR is 3.03. with the traxxas gear and original counter you are at 2.73. If you add a robinson 26 counter AND the traxxas gear its 2.54. I came up with the traxxas idea when i realized that those kyosho cluster were kind of hard to come by now... and pricey when you can find 'em.

Damn, I knew I should have re-read the Thorp gear before I bought one...I got the 28T. Parts on the way now, stock Traxxas gear and Thorp 28T gear, I will just pop a new hole in the motor plate. What do you do for a gear cover now? I plan on still running it, so I want to protect it as much as possible.
Well, pics when I get the parts and back together. I cleaned up the body and touched up the bad spots. Was going to order up a new one, but this paint job is growing on me for the car. Thinking about going brushed in it (along with my JRX2 and RC10 Worlds car), to have 3 original brushed runners and keeping the brushless stuff in my race cars.

I spoke with TBG a while back about doing a lexan repop of the stock cover and he has one listed now. I can't comment on it as I don't have one yet but he pulled it on the outside of a stock one, so there should be a lot more clearance

Actually, doesn't that (repopping a body using an existing body as a mold) decrease the size? I was of the understanding that making bodies from existing bodies resulted in all the TBG bodies being a tad undersize, because when the Lexan cools, it shrinks. When a proper mold is used, the Lexan can't shrink less than the mold will permit.

Yes, that method does.
This method was pulling directly over the top of an existing part, the part is thick plastic so he couldn't backfill it directly. I think once he had the outside pull done, then he back filled that one to make his buck

Got some parts in
Went to put the Traxxas outer gear in, so pulled the trans apart to find the diff gear teeth are eaten up

- project for another day.
Sooo....the Lethal Weapon has come back to this project
And some fresh J Concepts tires on stock wheels (yes, I need to clean up the wheels before I attempt to glue these up)

Looking good Joey. Can't wait to hear a track report from you. I'd love to give my ultima a race workout... just not enough time, money, oh and a track that's close too.
