Had a chance today to fiddle with the truck, and it appears all the radio gear works. Bonus!

Alright so the tear down has begun. I started by removing all the radio gear from the chassis, and bagging it away for later inspection and cleaning. The upper chassis' anodizing still looks good with only a couple of marks and faded points.

And then, since my order of parts haven't yet arrived, I decided to open up the motor to see what the internals look like. I tore it down to the block only, and found that overall, the engine is in quite good condition!


Components

*The piston and liner show very minimal wear/scoring - the kind of wear you would expect from a gallon or two of nitro.
*Pinch/compression was very apparent and up to the standards I would expect from a small displacement engine.
*The clutch pads were still very much intact and could see many more gallons of usage
*The crank showed no axial play on its bearings, and after an oil bath, the main bearings spun freely and smoothly.
*The carburetor was removed and treated to an inspection and cleaning. I removed all fuel varnish from the spray bar and needle jets with a good shot of carby cleaner and compressed air.

So the engine is just waiting on a new cooling head and some gaskets and it will be good to go hopefully.

Very nice , can't wait to see it finished.

Progress:

One of my order of parts arrived today, although not the one I was expecting! I'm still waiting for my first order which contained more critical parts, but I'll make do for now with what I've got:


Mostly just misc. hardware, and the new cylinder head!

Engine mounted, bumper mounted.

I checked the chassis for straightness and found it to be good, so i'll be using it, regardless of the small scuffs on the underside. If I come across a new one cheap at some point, I will grab it and install it. Not too fussed on the minor scratches.

The engine is only mounted temporarily for now, as I will obviously have to set gear mesh, but I might start it up and see how it runs when I get a chance, maybe even tune it, and being mounted to the chassis will make that easier.

Kind of at the mercy of my other order arriving, as all my important bits are in that lot!

Yes, they are pretty annoying, thinking if I ever replace the chassis I might shorten the ball studs threads by a mm or two to prevent this happening.

A bit more progress:

My second parts order arrived today, many thanks to USPS for the ~30 day shipping time

Here's what I got:


Bits and pieces

I got stuck right into it, so sorry for lack of pics, but I managed to mostly finish the front suspension/steering assembly, including rebuilding the shocks. They are very smooth throughout their stroke now. I was disappointed to see the front strut tubes were not the right colour, but I will keep an eye out for the correct ones and purchase them if/when they show up. No biggie.

I also mounted the fuel tank, as I wanted to start the thing up and see how it ran/tune it. Funnily enough the old .15 fired up on the third pull, and with a few adjustments to the HSN and LSN, ran pretty damn well!

Next step will be the rear suspension assembly and gearbox, and then I can look into checking the servos and electrical hardware. I also want to sand down and polish the pipe, as it is currently faded and scratched.

Had some time to rebuild the differential, and assemble the transmission:


Components soaking in denatured alcohol.


Cleaned, greased and ready to be assembled.

The diff action is so much better than it was! Very smooth, but still locks up fine. I didn't lubricate the actual gears in the transmission, as I'm pretty sure the stealth is designed to run 'dry'.

I was originally going to polish the pipe, but it really would have looked more 'blingy' than I'd like, especially on an otherwise completely stock vehicle, so I attempted to restore the original finish. I think I did a pretty good job:

I just sanded out any pitting, and followed that with a wire wheel on the dremel. The finish is smooth, with a slight brushed texture. I de-greased the surface once I was done, as there was a film of greasy residue remaining.

I could never have one like that; the blue chassis trucks are just to easy to modify, and I cannot resist the temptation!
