Re: mounting the body - I like the way kyosho did it on the front of the mini z optima and I have considered doing the same on the 1/10 scale version. Basic idea is cut the whole front off and tape it or Velcro it. The part behind the tower goes under a lip going across the tower. Manuals are online if you need a visual.

It might be awhile until I get further with the restoration. So meanwhile here is a photo of the wheels and tires painted. I need to apply a second layer of paint and fix them up a bit, but they came out pretty nice:
