That looks like a little less the 23 turns to me, maybe a 15 single or something along those lines judging by the thickness of the windings. Super cool piece of RC history :mrgreen:

That's a real early check point motor that uses slot car brushes . His background was slot car motors before moving into r/c motors. He used those brushes on his Platinum motors too.

Never seen a modded stock motor like that. That is a serious piece of history. Big Jim's motor black book is worth some serious coin now since he passed away so hang onto that baby.

camlchris and Mad Racer: Thanks for the additional info! I'm definitely going to restore this now. The brush work inside the endbell is really very nicely done.

adam lancia: I'll try to count/calculate the windings: 23 does seem high.

Wow, pretty complex compared to most closed endbells! Looks like the nailpolish isn't original, maybe it kept the can in good shape!

Nice! It looks very similar. I wonder if the can on mine is supposed to be unpainted as well.

WOW - I remember seeing one of these when I was a kid at the race track - must have been very late 70's or early 80's?

It may have started life as this before being re-tuned by Big Jim. I imagine the endbell / can were also taped so you never saw the poor paint work underneath?

I'm pretty sure that's the way the motor came when new. Big Jim was the first that I know of to use the sliding brushes. I seem to remember they were very expensive at that time, maybe even pushing the ROAR price limit for modified motors. Performance was good, but Jim always liked a lot of horespower so it made it tough to run 8 minutes with 1200mAh cells.

The cans were painted red and had a label applied. I think the labels were a little too thick and some of the guys would remove them to get more suspension clearance when using RC12i cars.

I also think Big Jim was the first to use silicone wires in a production modified motor.

Thanks for the additional info, Kent! The label is quite thick; it's actually two layers, the top being a clear mylar-type material.

RC10Resto/Jirka: this motor certainly looks similar to the Parma Ferrari, the endbell appears to be the same, but the can is different.
