everything's back together back together now and seems to be ok. but, i thought that last night too.
pretty sure the problem was that the torch was too small. big enough to do 1/2" pipe, but not 3/4". maybe it's just too old and not working properly. you had to put heat on the fitting for way too long before the solder would melt. in the meantime, burning off all of the flux. so, it didn't get a good solid solder joint. my dad stopped at the hardware store and got me the "binford 5000"of propane torches to do it this time. it worked much better. so, fingers crossed.
Having worked on all sorts of jobs along side plumbers h vac i learned that the only gas for sweating pipes is a mix Map gas (yellow can not blue ) the acetelean mixed with the propane means the fitting heats up FAST so saving your flux

oh and fyi when you sweat water pipes ( hot cold ) you must run the lines for about 10 mins to flush the flux out
