The other night I printed a prototype of the rear bulkhead


I printed it without the battery cup so it would print faster, it came out pretty good.


Pretty quickly though I discovered that I had messed up on the spacing on the bottom outer holes and it would not bolt to the chassis.


If I was relying on Shapeways for all my prototyping, this little mistake would have cost me 2-3 weeks (and some $$). Instead I fixed the CAD model the next day and will print another this weekend. This printer is the best purchase I have made in ages, even better than my mill.

Thanks for continuing to plug away at this! I bet there are a lot of user subscriptions to this thread, I know I get the emails and I'm watching.

That bulkhead looks awesome! It will save us a lot of dremel time on a stocker!

But more importantly, its got integrated belt guide mounts

I printed another rear bulkhead with the hole spacing fixed. It fits great now. The belt guide also works well, but its too high, I need to move it down to put more of a gap between the belt on top and bottom. Other than that i think its there.

Your print quality is slowly getting better. I imagine there's a pretty steep learning curve. Have you tried buying a polishing tumbler? You could see if it smooths the surface.

There is a pretty steep learning curve. I honestly haven't put a huge amount of effort into improving my prints since mainly I'm interested in checking fit and function of parts and much less about cosmetics. I've been printing in ABS, which is notoriously difficult, i could probably get nicer looking prints just by switching to PLA.

I was just reading this, I heard about the carbon before and sent you a link, but now fiberglass, Kevlar, nylon..... Amazing! The machine isn't cheap tho, but under $6k
