I found a picture on Amazon of them. What made this particular version so cool were all the page edges were shiny gold!

My family had those as well but were a brown hardback with the shiny gold page edges. Those were very handy back when.

And speaking of encyclopedias, Encyclopedia Brown were some of my favorite books to read back then.

I use to rent altered beast for Sega at one of the 3 video stores we had in my little 7000 pop. town.

I was terrible at most video games, but for some reason I was really good at Altered Beast. I think it is the only game I ever totally defeated without any cheats or assistance. I may have beaten Road Rash, also, memory is hazy. That game was funny!

My Sega came with Altered Beast, but later they swapped it for Sonic the Hedgehog.

Couldn't decide if I should post this here or in the Currently Playing thread. Decided that you had to be an old fart to get the references. For those curious, SM '03, JG '81, 867 '81

On the subject of Altered Beast, I owned the arcade machine back in the early '00s. I got it in a lot with other games. As a matter of fact, it was apparently the first thing I sold on eBay in 2004 under my current account: https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?t=45374

It was an innovative game but it always bugged me that there were only 5 measly levels. :?

That is probably the only reason why I beat it.

Having only 5 levels worked well for us because we didn't like multiplayer. We would pass the controller around the room and just play for high score. Alcohol was a factor. Having only 5 levels just meant everyone got more turns at it.

I literally forgot that game ever existed until it was mentioned in this thread :D so thank you!

On the subject of old video games, Contra. Up up down down left right left right B A start, think was the 30 lives cheat code. Even though the game could easily be beat with 1-3 lives.

If I remember right, it was partially done due to playability so you're on to something. It was also due to the technological limitations of the day as they used the room for the synthesized speech instead.

Atari. I didn't have one, but my buddy did. I remember Asteroids and one that was a scavenger hunt/maze. The object was to find keys and things as well as find your way out. Some of the screens were completely black and stayed that way unless you found a flashlight somewhere.

Commodore PET computer. This is what my high school had back in the day. We learned the most basic of Basic programming. Cassette tape backup, boy, that was a fun game, did it save or did it NOT save? Will the computer retrieve it or NOT?!?!?! Very frustrating to spend hours and days trying to program some little do-dab only to have it be lost in electronic oblivion.

Commodore and Commodore 64. Again, I never had one, but my buddy did and we played games on it every day after school. It's where I found Lode Runner. Back then you could build and save your own levels, we made some doozies!
