That's a really inspiring build , excellent work ,as soon as I saw this I was tempted to try my hand at one myself .
I've been looking at rere cars recently ,specifically the Scorpion and after my yz834b build last year I really fancy all the old school alloy suspension cars but just building a rere kit is not quite itching my scratch but a 4x4 conversion . After a little more thought instead of just copying your build I might see if I can do a Scorpion 4x4 build ,thank you so much for the inspiration ,it's got the brain cogs going already ,thank you .

If you haven't seen the site already, check out Time Tunnel and Time Tunnel 2. There's a 4x4 Kyosho Beetle on one of them. It might give you some ideas.

In a way they were an evolution of a 4x4 scorpion but with a lot of plastic instead of metal suspension and what I really like about this build and my idea of a scorpion 4x4 is the scale looking metal suspension .
My mate had a Progress way back when we were kids ,quicker than my hotshot but it never went in a straight line due to slack in the steering linkage and if you locked the rear steering it understaffed badly , happy days .

Thanks for the tip , I'll have a look ,might be a few months before I can get started as I have to finish some customer projects first .

This is just an incredible, jaw-dropping build. I finally had a chance to read through the whole build thread. Amazing. I'm wondering what wheels you used with the Kyosho Scorpion tires? They don't look like the stock Scorpion rear wheels, or are they?

Yep, they are rere black Scorpion wheels. They've been reversed to narrow the overall width to just under 244mm. Which is a hair's breadth over the old off road maximum legal width of 9 and 1/2 inches. I've also used nyloc nuts that are flanged and serrated to help hold the wheels from spinning on the stub axles.

Great build! So what did you build your cage out of? Was it from something else or did you custom fab it all?

The cage is scratchbuilt from 6mm diameter aluminium round bar. If memory serves it's 6016 grade.

I can tell you, it's a hell of a lot of fun bending it by hand.

Where did you get, or how did you fab the ends where it attaches to the rest of the cage?

The two cage bars are drilled and tapped with an M3 thread down the centre of each rod where they butt up against the top of the main hoop. The flat ends of both rods have also been fish mouthed with a round bastard file to fit the curve of the front hoop.

The horizontal joining piece at the back is treated in the same manner.

Where the two cage bars bolt to the gearbox at the bottom they are simply cross drilled with a 3mm drill bit.

The two holes on top of the main hoop are cross drilled on a slight angle to match the angle of the two cage bars.

Each leg of the main hoop is drilled and tapped with an M3 thread down the centre of the rod so it can be bolted to the chassis.

The cage itself has four M3 screws to hold it together. Welding would have been better, but wasn't an option.
