Actually, if I'm not mistaken, what you did is illegal. People who are driving on the highway CANNOT prevent cars from merging. Yes, people who are merging into highway traffic have to accelerate to be able to safely merge, but traffic in that lane must legally yield to the merging cars.

Oops. Wait a sec, as I remember there was a truck that passed me at the time but I just didn't get over right after he passed....yeah, that's it.

I think it safe to say that we've all done and do things that are questionable even though the roadway is NOT the place to be messing around. I don't mind yielding to the first guy on the ramp who is legally and courteously trying to merge, what I have a problem with are the 5 asswads behind him who are driving up the shoulder trying to squeeze in one extra car ahead. I've always been baffled at these idiots, traffic is at a dead standstill, yet they think that by cutting in and jamming up the pack even more that it will be faster for them.

The same can be said of the flow of traffic who won't open up a spot for merging traffic to begin with. You try to get on the freeway at rush hour around here and the flow won't let anyone merge but one in 10, which gets the shoulder riders riled up, which gets the flow riled up and not letting anyone in, which backs up the freeway even more . . .

A perfect example of what I've just said.

Technically? It's still part of the roadway, but it is not part of the road (i.e., traffic lane ) , you know, "technically".

Bumper to bumper traffic is an exception, BUT the acceleration lane/on ramp is the one with a yield sign. To bad most people dont know what that means anymore :?

It is two fold, the onramp is a yield lane, however it is also the lane where the merging traffic accelerates to match the flow of traffic. In addition, the flow of traffic must also yield to the merging vehicle. The proper procedure is that one merging vehicle enters after every other traffic flow vehicle (give or take ).

The problem is, 99% of the time, merging vehicles are not up to traffic flow speed, traffic flow won't yield to them because they're too slow and, of course, of all the shoulder drivers trying to squeeze in just one car further ahead, like that's going to get them somewhere in stop and go traffic.

Another rant!

Modern Truck Drivers in Western Canada

Gone are the days of the good old truck driver. You know the ones! The guys that grew up on a farm, working the tractor by age 12. The ones that would stop for a lady with a flat tire. May not be able to spell or write very well but could read, and would read the good book often. Had a good heart! These golden truck drivers are getting to the age where, it's time to stop pounding miles, time to hang up the hat!

The new generation! Probably grew up farming,... goats mostly! Never had to back a tractor trailer or any form of equipment in their life! JUST took a 2 week course and they are good to go!!!! By the way... Just learned to drive 2 years ago, if that!

Been snowing in Calgary the last few days, so the roads are not the best condition! Last night after a nice supper with my daughter and her husband, on the way home got side swiped by a semi and wrecked the back half of her car! Semi driver DID NOT STOP! You want to know the funny thing??? This all happened in front of a cop that was attending another accident! He witnessed the whole thing, but said he could do nothing to stop the semi as conditions were bad and with blowing snow, no licence plate could be seen! My daughter has third party insurance, so now she is SOL!

Thanks to a "NEW" semi driver that was probably dreaming of his favorite camel! My daughter, who thank god is still alive, now has a destroyed car and is already up to her neck in bills and debt!

And who is SELLING these "NEW" drivers their licence? I see the driving school semis all over my neck of NE Calgary! OTHER MORON goat herders! Vat? Very sorry, no speak English!

Rod, you are right on with this, with the exception of the un-educated part. The trucking industry has become another victim of big business types who are also willing to put any luke warm body behind the wheel. The top 'Big' companies have made it their mission to own all the freight and squeeze out every last independent. With that also comes the next nationality of driver who will do the job for even less. Same story it seems for so many different types of business.

I hope your daughter is ok and can find a way to deal with the misfortune.

For this and various other reasons, I've seriously considered installing a dash cam.
