Tire Mounting Question - To Foam or not... Insert that is
Tire Mounting Question - To Foam or not... Insert that is
OK,
So I am on the quest to mount alloy rims on one of my RC10's (I have a black tub and a gold tub). I have the rims (Pargu2000's Jellbean Reps from Ebay) and I have the tires (Proline Bowties for the rears and proline Dirt Hawg III's for the fronts). I also have procured a set of CE front Rims in order to pull the plastic insert ring for the front tires. Here is the question... Should I use the foam inserts that came with the tires??? I have the rears mounted with the black plastic liner that came with the rims, but the tires feel a little flimsy still... Has anyone else used the foam inserts, or are they a waste and overkill.... Thanks for the help!!!

i think for the newer tires (softer and more flexable)you will have to run the foam

That is my thought as well. I think I am going to trim the inserts though as they don't fit well with the rims... Thanks for the input!tulsa wrote:i think for the newer tires (softer and more flexable)you will have to run the foam

I myself wouldn't trim the inner rings as they act as a beadlock . If you are having trouble with the assembly try a light coat of dish soap on the tire bead before assembling the rims they will go together very nice. Also use the foam inserts in the tires without them the tires are to soft.

Rctenracer - I misspoke, I am not going to trim the plastic inserts, I am going to trim the foam inserts with the tires. They are HUGE!. I am going to thin them out a little to give the tires the form they need, but not poke through the front rims. Thanks for the input!

a good tool for trimming the foam is a a drum sander on an air die grinder, makes quick work of it and you can keep the contours nice. If you don't have such equipment you can use the little drum sanders in a dremel, same effect just takes a bit longer. Makes quite the mess though!NB25 wrote:Rctenracer - I misspoke, I am not going to trim the plastic inserts, I am going to trim the foam inserts with the tires. They are HUGE!. Along these lines: How do you Guys trim your Rear Foam Inserts, all 4 corners, just the outside, just the inside.......? I want to "Flatten" their Track. As they are now, not much more Tire on the ground than the Fronts.

I think it also depends on what you are doing, Shelfer or runner?
For my orig. RC10 6 gear thats never been run, Its stock, build w/o foams. All my runners will likely use foam. If this is going to sit on a shelf and you are keeping with the older period tires, if they are firm and won't flat spot, I would say no inserts. If you plan to use it in anyway, add foam.

Great information all!
I am going to run it, I know some will think i am crazy for running on the expensive rims, but I don't plan on trashing it, just playing in the basement and driveway and such, so It looks like I will be cutting some foam up this weekend!

I don't know I just got some alloy form noony and I'm going to run them on my team car.
But I got some sees on my on road RC10 I got 15 years ago and there still going strong. You change tire as much as you want and not mess them up. And they run so true.
That the thing about the 3 piece hes making I don't realy under stand how they work. The old 2.0 were hard. and you pinch them in the rim. The new tire are soft and i would think when you tryed to pinch them they would not hold. and just rip out.

Twice,
The Rears seem to hold pretty well, I am very interested to see how the the fronts hold up though. I know you can run a bead of glue around them, if you have issues or you can also use a little electrical tape on the edges... We'll see. Worse case, is that they only get used to pose for nice pics
