Kyosho Quad Rider EV

Post by Dangeruss »

In 1999 Kyosho brought out an electric version of their 1/4 scale 2wd ATV, christening it the Quad Rider EV. Sharing an identical platform with its Nitro powered older brother the EV was constructed with the same combination of off the shelf parts and Quad Rider specific components to create a more user-friendly electric model. Built primarily from fiber reinforced plastic three separate assemblies were used to create the chassis, A molded front frame set held the lower a-rms, hubs, and knuckle assemblies lifted from Kyosho's Nitro Pro ST racing stadium truck, fitted with adjustable metal camber links and a pair of neon green plastic body oil filled coilver shocks with spring tension clips and aluminum caps. Adjustable metal tie rods led to a Kimbrough servo saver attached directly to the vertically mounted servo made up the steering system, tucked neatly out of sight behind a pair of closeout panels. A flat aluminum plate that once held the fire breathing nitro engine now cradled an electric motor and speed controller as it served main chassis and lower skid plate duties. Lastly a molded plastic rear frame set connected the front and center frames into a single triangulated structure. Atop the rear frame set a longitudinally mounted battery sat directly under the riders saddle, below which was the attachment point for the swing arm supported solid axle rear suspension. A single oil-filled plastic body coilover shock with adjustable spring collar provided dampening to the ball differential equipped rigid axle driven by a miniature roller style chain connected to the motor via a pinion and spur primary drive. Digging into the dirt were a set of single piece 2.2 wheels wrapped in 540/100/62 Pin Spike rear tires and 510/100/62 Ribbed front tires purloined from the Nitro Pro ST parts bin. A clear lexan body, articulating hard plastic rider, Mabuchi RS-540 motor, rotary mechanical speed controller, and complete set of bushings were included in the partially assembled kit, sold less radio:
