Kyosho ATV Quad Rider

Post by Dangeruss »

In 1997 Kyosho unveiled a new vehicle to the R/C hobby, the 1/4 scale 2wd Nitro powered ATV Quad Rider. Replicating full size racing quad runners in quarter scale the Quad Rider utilized a combination of off the shelf parts and model specific components to create a very faithful model. Constructed primarily from fiber reinforced plastic the chassis was comprised of three separate assemblies, the molded front frame set held the entire front suspension which used the lower a-rms, hubs, and knuckle assembly from Kyosho's Nitro Pro ST racing stadium truck with adjustable metal camber links and a pair of neon green plastic body oil filled coilver shocks with spring tension clips and aluminum caps. The steering system consisted of adjustable metal tie rods leading to a Kimbrough servo saver attached to the vertically mounted servo that was tucked out of sight behind a pair of closeout panels. The center frame set was a flat aluminum plate that acted as a heat dissipating motor mount and lower skid plate while the molded plastic rear frame set which attached the front and center frames into a single triangulated chassis served as a mounting point for the swing arm supported solid axle rear suspension. A single oil-filled plastic body coilover shock with adjustable spring collar provided dampening to the ball differential equipped rigid axle assembly, itself driven by a miniature roller style chain that connected to the motor via a pinion and spur primary drive. Kicking up the dirt was single piece 2.2 wheels wrapped in 540/100/62 Pin Spike rear tires and 510/100/62 Ribbed front tires pulled from the Nitro Pro ST parts bin. A clear lexan body, articulating hard plastic rider, GS12S-CR .12 motor, muffler and complete set of bushings were included in the partially assembled kit, sold less electronics and radio. An electric version, the Quad Rider EV, was released in 1999:

Now for the important question: is it styled after a Suzuki Quadracer or a Honda TRX250R?

While I always raced the Honda, and it was objectively the better quad, I now see from your scans the Kyosho has the cutout in the rear fender for the LT's rear acting kick starter. The Fourtrax's goes forward. So I'd have to agree.

Both quads were long out of production in 1997, last years were 89 for the Fourtrax and 92 for the LT, so I'm surprised the kit was introduced that late.

*EDIT* well, both sides have that same feature, so maybe not.

Then comes 1999 and the Quad Rider EV in Yamaha blue and the whole conversation starts over again.

That one would be a little more vague. Yamaha's Banshee is pretty distinct.
