So, now I have to ask, which shock bodies are better? Fan RC or AE?

I ordered some AE reproductions for mine but I wonder if that was smart, now.

The bodies and shafts seem pretty similar in feel, but the fanrc Oring spacers and clips as well as the shock pistons are better imo. They do not require any cleanup. The AE molded shock parts are not molded very cleanly. Getting the pistons off the tree and cleaned up is time consuming, unlike their old parts that snapped off nice and clean. Now, once all the little AE parts are cleaned up I don't think you could ever tell a difference, but I'll never get back that extra 15 minutes spent vs the FanRC shocks

Hi Guys, got mine and started building .. put the diffs together on then to putting them into the gear cases and... wow If I haven't missed something I'm get about 1.5mm slop side to side with the diffs.. What you guys getting.. Just seems like it needs shims?

I shimmed mine, took 2-3 shims per side. Luckily I have them on hand, they are 3/8 shims. Not sure your availability being imperial size

I've been following this thread from the beginning. Unfortunately I didn't get all of the info here until after I placed my order. The conversation here has certainly dampened my excitement about it but not completely drowned it out. I have so much respect for MachV and all that he does for the hobby and on here just sharing his knowledge. it really is priceless help. I don't know much about any of this really. I joined probably last July or August after a 30 yr hiatus in the hobby. I believe the link for the shims above is his website...? I just ordered a pack of shims and look forward to browsing for more accessories to buy for now and far into the future.

Also, as suggested, I will definitely be looking into a true MachV paint scheme for mine as someone suggested should be the "box art" for this 4wd kit. Gonna try to make him proud.

So one of the last few posts mentioned the fan RC parts. I know this might not be the place to cover this but I have a question for all to consider... I'm gonna restore my original rc10 graphite and I've been waiting for certain parts to be available through AE. I'm admittedly an old school AE fan and am just getting used to the new AE/ TT that we have these days and coping with that. I can't find the damn original stealth trans with it... I have to replace it. I was under the impression that I would get the best quality and authentic parts from AE. Therefore been avoiding sourcing any restoration parts through Fan RC. But I can probably get everything I need through fan RC. And now it seems like the FanRC parts are actually better. Should I just get FanRC parts? To hell with AE. I can get all fan parts right now. Is this a good choice for restoration parts? Is it not kosher? I guess I feel like I need the ok from the community here to tell me... its OK. You're better off with non AE parts.

For apples to apples, FanRC to modern TTAE, I would personally go with FanRC for anything and everything. There is some bias there as I have worked with Cheng (FanRC) quite a bit over the past couple of years, but overall from what I have seen from the parts quality aspect, his stuff is just better. Will either compare to OG AE, probably not, and if the budget allows for original parts, of course go with those. But if I sit down to order 2025 parts for a RC10, I will order FanRC over TTAE every day of the week.

Morrisey... another great contributor that has helped me a ton... thanks again for the input. This actually makes my RC life so much easier. Yeah original parts would be ideal but while they are authentic they are as you said expensive and hard to come by which makes them hard to replace. From a mental standpoint I feel much better knowing everything is readily available.

Not to mention after building the FR-01 from Fan I was hard pressed to find any quality issues other than a little tightness in the gearbox which pretty quickly became a non issue. Once again Fan RC has impressed.

There are some reasons I can't really share that make me say that the FanRC parts are also closer to the originals. Remember all of the AE parts have been retooled, these are all fresh molds so restoring a car using them vs the fan parts are really no different. He is a one man team and does very well to keep our stuff running. I also feel like without fan, AE would have never got back into the vintage game. They needed him to prove the market much like the Ten4 proved that market as well.

I agree. Without fan who knows where we would stand with any of this rere stuff. I'm very happy to hear that Fan RC is a good source for parts that are similar to OE quality.

Fan RC took it to the extreme and copied the wrong transmission, with its problems and all

Which kinda gets to the part I can't really say out loud. The parts are really, really close.

He has since fixed that issue though.

Last year before the Ten4.1 was announced, there was a guy on here trying to dig up Ten4 parts and saying things about reproducing some in China. Could have just been an enthusiastic person wanting a Ten4.... or a TT AE employee.... ?
