Radio Shack

Post by Dangeruss »

Beyond offering computers and electronic components Radio Shack was home to another hobby rising in popularity... Radio Controlled electric vehicles. Selling primarily Nikko branded products in its hay day a large number of R/C enthusiests can say the car that got them hooked on R/C came from Radio Shack:

My best friend had a Golden Arrow, and I remember the time he brought it over. It was winter, and we tried running it in front of the shed but the ground was too slushy so it just spun the tires. Also, thanks to that ad I now remember I had those walkie-talkies too... Ah, memories. :)

I didn't realize they were Nikko cars, but that seems right.

The Pro-Pulse stuff is new to me. I've never seen that before. Was it 1/10 scale?

They were generic 1/18 scale rigs. Possibly manufactured by Megatech

Pro Pulses were a fad for a minute. I had one, I wasn't impressed. :D
I build RCs like people would have done back in the '90s ..................................... if they had 3D printers.

I still see Xmods pop up on ebay and temptation hits to have a new in box kit. I dont recall the buggy and other off road stuff getting much attention but the mini-z alternatives were pretty popular

My first hobby grade car came from America's Hobby Center.

It's a Cox Bandido that was on clearance. I still have it.

I had a whole bunch of Xmods back then. They were alot of fun. Still have them somewhere, haven’t seen them in forever though. I do remember getting the Transformer ones too but never opening them.

Propulse sounds like a very early version of what we are seeing with cheaper, somewhat durable, entry level bathers on aliexpress. I can't hate on em, some of them are actually really good for the money.

Ahhh yes, Archer and Realistic brands. I miss Radio Shack, KB Toys and Toys R Us so much.
