There is a word called cultural lag. Basically, the idea that technology progresses much faster than society's ability to process those changes.
I sent a reply that used ChatGPT on this forum and had personal concerns about AI ethics suddenly.

1) I clearly noted that my response to a member post was AI generated (mixed in with some of my own simple comments)
2) I reached out to the original poster and asked permission to use AI as part of the reply to their post.
3) I stated that I would edit my post based on their response.

The rules we make as a community always "lag" so this is a good to raise any future concerns on the matter.

Personally I'm not a fan of AI responses. They don't represent the person posting the response, they have the bias of the AI engine built into them, and sometimes they are just plain dumb. I don't find them interesting or exciting. This response was not generated by AI.

This is not targeted at you, rather the usage of ai. If you are someone that doesn't want to communicate on a forum, why would you be here? Using AI to write what computers think about a situation brings nothing of real life experiences. If I wanted to know what Google thought about something I would ask it. If I'm here asking real people questions and I get these dumb 3 page long off topic ai responses it's going to really piss me off

I can imagine my neighbor and I standing in the driveway with tablets in our hands, having an AI driven back and forth. Me not wanting this has nothing to do with me lagging behind wanting to do it.

That was me. was pretty much showing that how absurd AI was. It wasn't that bad about comping up with liveries tho.

It all depends on how you use AI. It can go from fancy spell check all the way to content generation.

I don't have any problems at all using AI in an ethical sense. For RC it's useless and counter productive. It just doesn't have the answers needed for anything that is asked on this board.

AI is a tool, just like an abacas or a slide rule or a calculator or a microprocessor or a computer or a cell phone.

We'll know the cultural lag is over when we think of AI like we think of these things.

I don't think anyone wanted texting. Or email. Or the Internet.
The poor guy riding his horse through 7 states to deliver a message wasn't like, "Man I can't wait for texting".

I find the same people acting "more knowledgeable" on subjects like this to be the same as flat earthers. Just pushing their "knowledge" as an attempt to try to be smarter than the rest. The "others" just aren't smart enough to understand what is front of them.

AI is a pretty generic term and I think it is perceived or interpreted broadly. And often associated with use cases, despite it being more like a science or a discipline.
The public understands AI from tools like ChatGPT and news articles, which as we know tend to sensationalize for the monies.
But businesses understand it quite a bit differently. And are using it increasingly to create efficiency. Just as they did with the tools I mentioned earlier.
This is where most of the AI energy is being placed. AI is authoring or assisting in authoring code for things we interact with commonly. Like ESC firmware. Or apps we install on our phones. Music streaming services use it like crazy.
It's already here. It's already everywhere.

In response to the OPs comment about the ethics parts, I often try to help others on forums (not this one much as y'all know far more than me) by doing a quick search to learn the topic myself or just to validate what I plan on sharing. I don't tell them that I used google to craft my response. That seems silly. I am accountable for what I share being accurate, regardless of the source. I feel like using ChatGPT or similar doesn't change the equation much.

Very little information is created through original research. That is, when you are the originator of the information. We tend to aggregate and regurgitate information. AI tools like ChatGPT are really good for doing that. So I am using it more and more. Mostly because google search is now junk and heavily influenced by commercial interests. Its great to use if you want to buy something

This whole forum would never have existed if it were not for "cultural lag"- it is a vintage RC car forum in modern day after all.

I have no interest in anything related to AI, I understand that it's part of my everyday life to some extent, although way less that most.

The joke about AI to me is that it's offered up to "help" and "streamline" your (insert here) but in doing this your just teaching the algorithm how to program you out of the equation in the long run (not like terminator)

It's not AI, it's just dumbing society down. Lane assist is a tool to keep you from running off the road, but, if you just stop scrolling on tik tok or Instagram then you slyly be in control of the car and not need that tool anyway
