STOP using photobucket / Flickr / Image shack WHATEVER here!

Post by Chewbacca »

Instead of replying to the thread “It sucks that pics are disappearing here”, I thought a direct title might be a bit more effective.

I totally agree with hugger19 that it is really annoying that a lot of pictures with valuable information get lost over time.

Since modern phones take fairly high resolution pictures, they can easily exceed the 3MB size restriction.

The quick and dirty solution is to take a screenshot of the picture you want to upload and use the the attachment function below the text area.

Look at THIS screenshot

That way the pictures remain online, as long as RC10Talk stays online.

Thanks to everyone who is willing to do so in the future.

The screenshot is a nice option, I use it all the time. Some times I add a couple extra steps by just taking a picture, then crop it then save it at 40-60% "quality", then post it. I think one of the coolest changes to the forum here was the picture hosting addition. Or maybe RC10Talk always had that capability?
Hope you're doin' something fun.

I do the same, save at 40% size. The only downside is the images are displayed at a low resolution and you have to click the images to view them at a higher resolution.

That is probably done to allow the screens to load faster.

One or two pics probably wouldn't make much difference. But something like the "25 years of the RC10" is different.

The other way to reduce the picture file size that's really easy is to simply take the photo from further away then simply crop it down to size , way easier .

Are people still using pic hosting sites?

I've seen a few in recent times but I think the bulk of the regulars host here now after seeing what happens over time.
There used to be a feature where the pics would be automatically resized which was super handy. I post a fraction of what I would if that was still around.

I usually send the picture to myself and then download the one I receive to post. I guess Verizon automatically shrinks the file. There are easier ways, I'm sure.

I’m with you, what always works for me using an iPhone is taking the picture with it on it’s side so the pic is wider then taller. Crop it down a little and it’s good to go. Worked with my 10 I started out with here and still works great with the 15 pro max.

I've been saying this for years, since before Photobucket kicked the bucket and wanted to force all their users to pay subscription fees to host their previously-free image galleries. Most people said "f*** that noise" and didn't pay. Shortly after millions of photos shared on hundreds of forums broke, and thousands of forum topics that would've been extremely helpful were rendered useless.

I have always uploaded my photos directly to forums I'm a member of; that way, no matter what happens to image hosts, my topics will always be complete.

The only time I had a problem was with the Turbo Buicks forum I'm on, they had a server crash and everyone's data was lost prior to the crash. That sucked.

Part of the problem is there are too many people who can't take it upon themselves to learn how to resize and upload pictures. C'mon already, we're a quarter of the way into the 21st century!

im sure i have a bunch of dead images from way back when used pbucket. its nice to upload directly but the 3mb upload limit is a hassle...

that said theres apps that will batch process images and resize them to whatever size you want. ive been using one lately for posting pics here.

I know higher resolution is always nice, but I just adjust my settings so the pics will be less than 3 MB.

That's a major concern of mine as well. Let's just say we're in quite the pickle with all the attachments. :!: :?

Yeah, is 3mb really that small? I think the bigger problem is the super mega 4k resolution devices are automatically set at these days. When images are uploaded but then aren't used in a post and not deleted, they become what's called orphaned attachments. I have to manually purge them daily as not to accumulate. You should see how huge some of them are dimensionally. No wonder the limit is a problem for some when poster sized pics are being uploaded.

I've also increased the size limit a few times over the years but the thing is we only have a finite amount of storage space so it's a fine line. Does anyone know the individual file size upload limits of other forums? We can then figure out the average to see where our limit fits in.

Resizing images, and reducing their file size is a pretty rudimentary task these days BUT the fact of the matter is it shouldn't be something users have to worry about doing. The entire discussion regarding the file size cap of attached images is the fault of the phpBB software developers. There is no reason why an attached image size processor shouldn't be a standard feature. People should be able to upload any sized image, and the board should then reduce it down to fit the constraints automatically. I mean that's a pretty common feature on the Internet these days. As a matter of fact, someone did create a plug-in for this board software that did just that in which we used for a period of time which was great!! Unfortunately they abandoned keeping it updated, and it stopped working with the latest board versions.

3 MB is ridiculously huge for uploading to a forum. Microsoft used to have an Image Resizer Utility, which I install on every computer I work with. I don't think you can find it to download unless you do some searching. It will take a huge 3+ MB hi-res camera photo and choosing the "Large" resize option, it will downsize it in a flash to 150 - 300 KB. A fraction of the size but still looks nice and clear on a computer monitor. You can also batch resize several pics. What's best is you don't even have to launch the program; it has a context-sensitive menu in Windows, you just right-click the image(s) and there will be "Resize image" and even "Rotate right/left 90 degrees" menu options. It's idiot-simple.

Try to find it; the filename for 64-bit Windows is ImageResizer_v2.1_64-Bit.msi.

Here's an example; this pic was downsized from my cellphone. I have a 30" monitor and the image at full size takes up maybe almost 2/3 of the screen area, looks perfectly clear, and is under 200 KB. I could upload 15 of these in comparison to a single 3 MB photo:

Since most of us use our phone for pictures, just use the gallery editor function (or screenshot).

This is from my Samsung Galaxy.
