Aluminum/silver shocks for Javelin re-re

Post by Crestwood23 »

Wanting to replace the red stock shocks with silver/aluminum colored shocks. Anyone know where I can find some that will work with the Javelin?

If you just want the shocks to be silver... soaking the body's in sodium hydroxide (generally oven cleaner, though also drain cleaner) will remove the red anodizing.

You may also need to polish them up a bit after deanodizing them, as sometimes a blackish smut will appear on the aluminum...I think this depends on the quality of the anodizing. But polishing them up is worthwhile if you're going for esthetics. Here are some originally gold Optima parts that I deanodized with Easy-Off oven cleaner and polished prior to having them re-anodized in purple and green for my Barney Optima car.

P.S. The knuckles were originally dark blue anodize, they were hop-up parts for the Lazer ZX-5.

Nice - they look great. Exactly what I’m going for - OG aluminum. Looks like it will take some elbow grease to get there but happy I don’t have to buy new parts.

A Dremel with a few accessories and some polishing compound will make quick work of it. I use the white compound from Harbor Freight.

Can confirm. The dremel polishing pads and Autosol metal polish makes aluminum parts nearly mirrored.

These shocks were originally anodized blue and the caps black.

The bulk of the color was stripped with Easy Off. Any remaining color was removed with a brass wire wheel on a Dremel.

The main polishing was done with a buffing wheel and white compound. They were then finished with a polishing flap and Mothers wheel polish.
