Today's Haul - RC10CE

This popped up on FB Marketplace only about 10 minutes from my house for a very reasonable price. Complete with a Novak T4 and original stock motor, plus a Novak brushless system that I know absolutely nothing about. Not sure if that's worth anything, but still pretty cool. Chassis is very straight and clean. Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet. Disassembly and cleaning process beginning now....

Box and manuals along with 2 vintage Novak systems. That has some nice looking extras. All you need is a transmitter.

Already have a transmitter and receiver. Just need to replace the turnbuckles, ball ends and cups and wheels and tires. I have two clear Protech bodies, and two painted by Andy Jacobsen so I'm mostly good to go. Just wish the chassis was drilled for a Stealth transmission, but I'll live with the six gear. Part of me wants to pick up a graphite chassis and move everything over to that.

For the 6 gear trans, have you looked into the outdrive bearing mod? For an RC10 runner with a 6 gear trans, it seems like a must do to me. The original bearing setup with the outdrives seems like it gets sloppy/floppy and I worry about the outdrives then chewing up the idler gears. It is nice that AE now sells idler gears again if they end up being needed.

I do the mod just by adding the bearings and then one 2-56 screw and washer to keep the left side bearing in place. On the right side the motor plate will keep the bearing from walking out.

OK, I have outdrive bearings in my other two Gold Pans that are shelf queens, so they haven't been run for more than a couple of minutes in the driveway, so I've never experienced any issues, but I'm totally confused by this mod. Did you add the brass tubing on the inside of the bearing?

I've done the brass tube on the outside before but typically don't anymore. I do it a more simple way now. I keep bearings inside the outdrive too, but add the external outdrive bearing for better support.

The screw on the left side replaces the brass tube?

How I do it, I put a sleeve over the outdrive that keeps the big 5/8" x 3/8" bearing from moving further in. It could also be something in the gearbox case as long as it doesn't touch both the inner and outer bearing races. The screw on the outside prevents the big left side bearing from coming out of the gearbox case.

Isn’t the sleeve the piece of brass tubing mentioned in the posts you shared? That’s what I’m confused about.

A sleeve/tube can be added on the outdrive to keep the bearing spaced away from the gear (closer to dogbone end) as shown in this marked pic.

I think that a thin 5/8" o-ring in these 2 spots would keep the outdrive bearing spaced outward instead of the brass sleeve. The left side would still need a screw to keep the bearing from walking out, and right side has the motor plate to hold it in.

Same, I don't like to overconstrain it since the bore in the case and idler spine are not always exactly aligned. Some work great with three bearings, others will bind up a little
