RC10 DS Classic - Build

Ran into a problem, was missing (2) ball studs from Bag A, tore the place apart looking for them.

Hope that saves someone else some wasted time and grief.

Wish I had read this first, and this one line will convince me to read your whole build before continuing. I was also missing the two ball studs in Bag A, but just grabbed a couple out of the parts bin. Would have saved some time and trouble if I had known this tid bit before diving into it.

Also in Bag A, I didn't not have any 1.11" king pins as called for in Step 3. I had four .951" pins, which is fine and they work as intended. Just a random fact.

This was the least expensive and most modern components I could find for the DS. A $32 Reedy servo, and Xerun $112 ESC/Motor combo. Kind of wanted to step up a bit from the 1060/silver can experience on this one.



2S only.


Comes with the sensor cable and ESC fan.


Need to figure out the right pinion to use, nothing in the manual regarding that, or the diameter of the tires.


Been using this chart to determine pinion/spur size. Is there anything more accurate or better?


DS Classic kit comes with 81T 48P spur.

As I get closer to running this DS, I'm not really comfortable gluing and peeling out on these tires that are irreplaceable, that's one of the very things that makes me not run some of my vintage RC's. I'm starting to think about foam instead, won't look as good, but I don't want to ruin the DS wheels and tires, too awesome.

Could get a set of plastic 12mm wheel hex's and some Tamiya TAM50548 or other tasty plastic wheels:



Fronts... super glue the wheel hex into the wheel, once dry drill the axle hole out to 3/8's then put a pair of 3/16x3/8 flanged bearings in and bolt the wheels up.

Rears... hex's slide right onto the axles, everything bolts up like normal.

They filmed parts of the in movie in Ojai, the town I grew up in. I was only 6 when they were filming but I remember it being a pretty big deal

Really curious about the Active Track feature for the Air3, wonder if it can follow such a small object such as a 1/10 RC, and keep it in frame.

If you intend to use a brushed motor, it will fit the DS without issue. If you intend to use a brushless motor, you may need to mod the motor mount.

I had to file the motor mount a bit to get the 3650 brushless motor to fit, the silver dot over the top screw hole had to be filed. Would not have gone in correctly.


DS kit did not include the motor mounting screws, which are metric M3, or 3mm x 6mm. Went with 23T pinion with the 81T spur.


$32 Reedy servo does not comes with horns, or screw. Had these laying around luckily.


Chassis entirely completed.


Will finish spraying the bodies tomorrow.

You gonna run (a) washer(s) on the motor screws?

Thought occurred to me. Since the mesh part of the wheel is a separate disk that's non-structural we can easily change up these disks with custom 3d printed ones to get different looks.
