Howdy From Hawai’i Island!

Post by Xoid »

Hey all, it’s a pleasure to finally stop lurking this site and to join up for some fun RC car discussion. I’m a long-time RC enthusiast, originally poisoned by a Tamiya Grasshopper back in oh, 1984 I think it was and have had the disease ever since despite taking some hiatuses as needed. I love old RC cars, and designing aircraft, boats, and vintage style buggies. It’s cool to get into Rc10Talk and see where it goes. If you’d like to track me down elsewhere I tend to talk about my vintage Kyosho projects a lot over at Tamiyaclub and you’ll find me as “Anthroxoid” there since their site wouldn’t allow a simple 4-letter handle.

Anyways, stoked. We have no real RC race tracks out here but I’ve been building a lot of ReRes over the past years and keeping busy making models far more than running them. I love a good old Tamiya, Kyosho, Yokomo, and of course Associated Electrics design to build—Schumacher may be my fav, though I try to just go after whatever is a good design and appreciate them for what they are. Got some modern 4WD buggies built just to see how far things have come along and they’re pretty cool.

Gotta say I’m fairly well diseased with 1/10th, 4WD buggy obsession, though presently ooching towards ordering the 10T ReRe since AE announced that they’ll start carrying parts. I love a good running 10T with a dialed Stealth tranny.

Also have a terrible vintage 540 motor habit, worse than drugs I swear, and collect old Reedy and Trinity mods, as well as some more obscure stuff made by AYK and Air Supply, tho own no Top motors yet. I’m getting into winding my own arms just because why not? It’s fun stuff for late night tinkering and learning how the Big Guys made such nice motors before brushless took over.

Looking forward to being allowed into the trading forums (however the heck that works) and in the meantime plan to put together a second, LWB Optima Mid Custom. I just love the Optima Mid even though the YZ-10 was in some ways superior I guess via simplicity, and will post my next build here. This forum seems pretty active, so aloha to y’all and I’ll look forward to learning and sharing some old school, and modern buggy chat with you folks.

Cheers,
—Xoid

Welcome sir! Looking forward to seeing the build. Former Oahu (Hawaii-Kai) kid here (early 80’s), you will find me mostly in the Yokomo section lol although I have a RC10GT resto on the go.
I come for the RC10's but stay for the Yokomo's :P

Current projects:
1993 WCS Faux-komo
1994 Yokomo Box-Art
RC10GT Restoration

Excellent intro Xoid. Indeed, please post that motor collection. It's kind of an unofficial requirement from us other motor collectors on here

Hey thanks everybody. I’ve seen some incredible stashes of good cans on this forum but will get around to adding a pic or two over in the vintage electronics forum pretty soon. Gotta get my toothpaste out first, and still waiting on more labels from MCI for two Speedworks and one Joel Johnson restoration, though I guess I could start with my old Kyosho Le Mans stuff.

When I was a kid I wanted an RC10 with a green label Reedy Modified like any sane person would but never had those stars align, so I’m currently trying for at least the Reedy part of the picture. Recently got very interested in seeing how 05s went from pan car closed cans to insane, 7Tdouble 540s with huge magnets as that progression was after my earlier car enthusiasm had gone all brushless aircraft for a long time, and so I started at the beginning with only two of my original brushed motors remaining from the 90s. I figured that a Le Mans modified would be a good starting point along with what Mike was winding to make his Yokomo kit go so damn fast, but have lots of holes in the stuff that I’ve been able to find, like missing some mass production runs (Speed Gems for example) and still haven’t landed a Krypton to check out how beefy the quad magnet can could pull an arm. Anyways, it’s not much yet but there is a pearl or two in the stash:

I had no idea that Trinity got its start sourcing motors from Kyosho, so that was neat to learn. The orange billet Monster Horsepower was marketed as an oval racing can (14x2) and I’d never heard of Air Supply making a good can so have the TRIX (off-road mod, no more I can find out) still en route to ponder. Honestly, I probably won’t sleep well until somebody sends me a NIB LeMans in every flavor like that 480Gold (it is precious, and so well made) and collect at least a few more of Mr. Reedy’s earlier designs. They’re just peak iconic motors, plus I’d like a better look at the windings for my late night tinkering. Anyways thanks so much for the welcome, and I hope that the motor tease works alright as an appetizer.

Thanks, @RogueIV i appreciate very much. Sorta feel like ‘I’ve come back home’ when getting to talk about the RC disease with other victims, so here’s to that.

It's a disease that's fun at least!, although it sure is starting to take up a good amount of room.
